NC Universities Panel To Weigh In On UNC Scandal

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A panel looking into how the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill allowed and responded to an academic fraud scandal is getting a chance to speak.

Part of the governing board for the state university system weighs in Thursday on the scandal that led to the resignation of Chancellor Holden Thorp and departure of football coach Butch Davis.

The scandal involves dozens of courses in UNC-Chapel Hill's Department of African and Afro-American Studies where instructors did not teach, grades were changed and grade reports were faked over more than a decade.

An investigation led by former Gov. Jim Martin and aided by consultants says there's no evidence student-athletes gained more than others from the academic fraud that began in 1997.
