NC Highway Patrol Trooper Shot In Durham; Suspect In Custody

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper is recovering after being shot during a traffic stop in Durham.

Officers announced thismorning that a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting has been arrested.

Patrol Sgt. Maurice Devalle told The Herald-Sun of Durham that Trooper Mike Potts had surgery Monday night at Duke University Hospital. Devalle said the trooper was doing well, though his face is swollen. He was in fair condition early Tuesday.

Gov. Pat McCrory went to the hospital after his State of the State address Monday to see the trooper

Devalle says Potts had stopped a car around 6 p.m. Monday because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Devalle says the trooper was hit several times.

A car that appeared to be the suspect's vehicle was found abandoned behind a restaurant several hours later.
