Amtrak Trains Hit, Kill 2 Pedestrians In NC

GREENSBORO, N.C. Amtrak trains struck and killed two pedestrians in one day on tracks in Durham and Greensboro, officials said.

The first man was struck about 12:30 p.m. Sunday on a railroad bridge in Durham by the Piedmont 75 train heading to Charlotte, said Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods.

The man's identity wasn't immediately released. Durham police said he died at the scene.

In Greensboro, a man identified as Ricardo Aleman, 36, was hit by an east-bound train about 4:15 p.m. Sunday on a track near Interstate 40, said Greensboro police spokeswoman Susan Danielson. She said investigators don't know what Aleman was doing on the tracks when he was hit.

No one on the trains was hurt in either accident, but service was delayed and railroad officials had to bus hundreds of passengers to their destinations, including some of the fans who attended the Carolina Panthers football game with the San Francisco 49ers in Charlotte.

Police and Norfolk Southern Railroad are investigating the deaths.
