NC Democrats Gather As 2014 Campaigns Pick Up

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Hundreds of Democratic advocates are gathering in North Carolina's largest city to begin a year they hope will end with Democratic gains in the General Assembly and Congress and with Kay Hagan keeping her U.S. Senate seat.

The state Democratic Party's executive committee scheduled their regular meeting Saturday afternoon, followed by the annual Sanford-Hunt Frye dinner at the Charlotte Convention Center.

More than 450 people were expected to attend the evening event. It celebrates former four-term Gov. Jim Hunt, the first black state Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry Frye and the late governor and U.S. Sen. Terry Sanford.

The dinner's keynote speaker is Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (KLOH'-buh-shahr).

Republicans currently control the General Assembly and hold nine of North Carolina's 13 U.S. House seats.
