Charlie Rose Named North Carolinian Of The Year

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The North Carolina Press Association has named journalist Charlie Rose its 2014 North Carolinian of the Year at its annual meeting Thursday.

Rose, who has hosted The Charlie Rose Show since 1991 and co-hosted CBS This Morning since 2012, was born and raised in Henderson. He received his undergraduate degree and his juris doctor from Duke University.

"Rose is a shining reflection of his North Carolina roots," said NCPA Board President, Les High, who nominated Rose. "He has set incredibly high standards in journalism, raised the task of interviewing to an art form and been a standard-bearer for the best of broadcast journalism."

The press association also gave its William C. Lassiter First Amendment Award to N.C. Rep. Marilyn Avila for her work to preserve open government access.

The Wake County Republican received the honor for rallying support in last year's legislative session for compromise legislation on public notice placement.
