NC Judge Weighs Order Blocking Teacher Tenure Law

RALEIGH, N.C. Public school teachers are asking for quick action from a North Carolina judge to block a law taking effect this summer that eliminates more than 40 years of job protections in favor of employment contracts.

Lawyers for state lawmakers and the objecting teachers were going to court Monday as a judge considers the future for the law that starts a five-year process to move all teachers into employment contracts that make them easier to fire.

The North Carolina Association of Educators and six veteran teachers sued in December to block the law they say takes away requirements that school administrators follow a defined process when firing a teacher.

Supporters say teachers will work harder and increase classroom performance without the job protections tied to tenure.
