Ex-Prof In UNC Academic Scandal Due Back In Court

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. A former professor at the heart of the scandal involving academics and athletics at America's oldest public university is due in court, charged with cheating taxpayers by failing to instruct his students in a summer-school course.

Julius Nyang'oro was the long-time chairman of the African studies department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is due in Orange County court next week on the felony fraud charge.

He's accused of receiving $12,000 for teaching a lecture course in 2011 that never met. The school recouped the money from his paycheck when he retired in 2012.

Nyang'oro's attorney said when the ex-professor was indicted nearly seven months ago that he would plead innocent to the charge. Nyang'oro's attorneys didn't return messages seeking comment this week.
