NC Judge Lifts Restrictions On Michael Peterson

DURHAM, N.C. A Durham County Superior Court judge has lifted the restrictions on a Durham novelist awaiting a new trial in his wife's death in 2001.

Judge Orlando Hudson on Tuesday ruled that Michael Peterson is no longer under house arrest and may remove the electronic monitoring devices he's worn for more than two years.

Peterson was convicted in 2003 of first-degree murder in the death of Kathleen Peterson, who was found at the bottom of a staircase in the couple's Durham home. He served nine years in prison, but was granted a new trial and released after the work of State Bureau of Investigation agent Duane Deaver was discredited. Deaver provided blood analysis testimony.

Kathleen Peterson's family was in court and argued that Michael Peterson is a flight risk.
