Man Found Not Guilty In Duke Student's Death
DURHAM, N.C. — The man serving a life sentence for the shooting death of the student body president at the University of North Carolina six years ago has been found not guilty in the death of a Duke University graduate student.
A jury in the trial of Laurence Alvin Lovette found him not guilty on Wednesday of armed robbery and murder in the death of Duke graduate student Abhijit Mahato in 2008.
Defense attorneys Karen Bethea-Shields and Kevin Bradley said the jury reached the right verdict because the prosecution failed to present credible evidence.
Assistant District Attorney Jim Dornfried said he was disappointed but accepts the jury's decision.
After the verdict was read, Lovette was led away by deputies to continue serving his life sentence for the death of Eve Carson in 2008.
