North Carolina governor rolls out further abortion protections ahead of next Trump term

North Carolina governor rolls out further abortion protections ahead of next Trump term

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein announced measures to protect reproductive health care providers and patients via a new executive order. The order announced Thursday mandates that state Cabinet agencies will not cooperate with prosecuting and penalizing physicians who provide lawful reproductive health services. It also requests state agencies to review and revise how they store patients’ reproductive health data to ensure their privacy. The announcement joins a growing movement by Democratic governors to protect abortion access before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office next week. Trump’s stance on abortion was largely inconsistent on the campaign trail and it’s unclear what action he will take.… Continue Reading

‘I don’t want to get involved’: NC college students avoid abortion conversations on campus

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — It’s mid-October, less than two weeks away from Election Day, and students are rallying in full force at UNC-Chapel Hill. Student organizations sit in the Pit—a brick patio that sits below ground level at the heart of the UNC-CH campus, where it’s believed that every student passes through at least once a day—asking if their fellow Tar Heels have voted, preaching the gospel or recruiting new members. One club’s table that can often be found is Students for Life at UNC-CH, a pro-life campus organization that strives to serve and educate the student body about abortion. The group’s signs, with messages such as “Abolish Abortion” and “Choose Life,” intend to help students engage in thoughtful conversations about abortion—but are not always met with support from UNC-CH’s largely liberal campus.… Continue Reading

‘She should be alive today’ — Harris spotlights woman’s death to blast abortion bans and Trump

ATLANTA (AP) — For the first time since she ascended to the top of the Democratic ticket, Vice President Kamala Harris has given a speech focused squarely on abortion rights. She did so Friday in Georgia, where she highlighted the death of a woman who developed sepsis while waiting for a routine procedure. Her speech described Republican candidate Donald Trump as a threat to women’s freedom and their very lives, calling such deaths preventable and predictable. Harris’ campaign is hoping reproductive rights will be a strong motivator for Democrats in the November election. Trump, meanwhile, continues to take credit for appointing Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Harris held a rally later Friday in the swing state of Wisconsin.… Continue Reading
