Boys with cancer can face infertility as adults. Can storing their stem cells help?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Researchers have performed the first known transplant of sperm-producing stem cells in hopes of restoring fertility in a man who survived childhood cancer. There’s no proven way to preserve boys’ future fertility if cancer strikes before puberty. But a University of Pittsburgh study for years has frozen testicular tissue and cells before boys begin treatment to see if they eventually might help. How colorful, personalized patches bring joy to young cancer patients

MIAMI (AP) — A Miami charity is helping children with cancer by sending them denim jackets and tote bags adorned with decorative patches. The Oliver Patch Project was created by 13-year-old Oliver Burkhardt and his parents after he underwent treatment for leukemia when he was 9. Oliver’s dad, Brian, had request patches be sent to his son to bolster his spirits. More than 2,000 came. Some were sewn onto Oliver’s jacket and it became his suit of armor. They thought other kids with cancer might like them, too. More than 1,600 children from throughout the United States have received a jacket or tote.
