Seth Jarvis scores twice and the Carolina Hurricanes stay unbeaten, beating the Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored his 100th and 101st NHL goals, and the Carolina Hurricanes remained the NHL’s only unbeaten team with a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Alexander Nikishin scored his first NHL goal and Shayne Gostisbehere matched his career high with three assists for the Hurricanes, who improved to 4-0-0 with their second win to start a six-game trip. Leo Carlsson scored and Lukas Dostal stopped 27 shots for the Ducks in their first home defeat under new coach Joel Quenneville. Carrier, Robinson score late in 2nd period and Hurricanes beat Sharks 5-1 to improve to 3-0

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — William Carrier and Eric Robinson scored 4 1/2 minutes apart late in the second period, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the San Jose Sharks 5-1. Sean Walker Shayne Gostisbehere and Jackson Blake also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won three straight to open the season. Logan Stankoven had two assists and Brandon Bussi stopped 16 shots in his NHL debut. William Eklund scored for San Jose, and Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 38 saves. San Jose had opened the season with two overtime losses. The Hurricanes topped 40 shots on goal for the second straight game, and held the Sharks without a shot in the third period. Hurricanes defenseman Slavin exits early against Flyers, status for road trip unclear

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for a long road trip with concerns about the status of defenseman Jaccob Slavin. He missed a large portion of the third period and all of overtime in Saturday night’s 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said the team will know more about his status on Monday. Slavin logged less than 4 1/2 minutes of ice time following the second period Saturday night. Jarvis scores winner late in OT as Hurricanes top Flyers 4-3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored with 16.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Jarvis also scored the go-ahead goal in Carolina’s season-opening win over New Jersey. Jarvis, who has three goals this season, is building off his 2024-25 season when he was the team’s leading goal scorer. Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes. Frederik Andersen made 20 saves. Bobby Brink had a goal and an assist and Owen Tippett and Travis Sanheim also scored for the Flyers. Samuel Ersson stopped 35 shots.… Continue Reading

Old guard still runs the Metropolitan Division, though times could be changing soon

Times are changing in the Metropolitan Division, even if many of the top teams remain the most legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. Washington coming off finishing a distant first has much of the same team back with Alex Ovechkin going into what could be his final NHL season at age 40. Carolina added one of the top free agents in Nikolaj Ehlers to a core that has been to the Eastern Conference final two of the past three years. Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signs 8-year, $45 million contract extension

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signed an eight-year, $45 million contract extension Thursday that will begin with the 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old Blake, the son of former NHL forward Jason Blake, had 17 goals and 17 assists in 80 regular-season games last season and added three goals and three assists in 15 playoff games. The 5-foot-11 right wing was drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round in 2021. He played two seasons at the University of North Dakota.… Continue Reading

Nikolaj Ehlers chooses the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the NHL’s top free agent off the market

The long wait for Nikolaj Ehlers’ free agent decision is over. Ehlers decided to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the top player available off the market more than 72 hours since the NHL’s signing period began. Ehlers agreed to terms on a six-year contract worth $51 million. He’ll count $8.5 million against the salary cap through 2031. Carolina had plenty of space to add the speedy, productive Danish winger. K’Andre Miller is eager for his new start after trade from New York Rangers to Carolina Hurricanes

K’Andre Miller is eager to start work with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes acquired the 25-year-old defenseman from the New York Rangers on Tuesday. They also signed him to a long-term deal. Carolina sees Miller as a strong fit for their aggressive, fast-paced system. The former first-round pick brings size and skating ability to the blue line. The Hurricanes are retooling the defense with veterans Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov likely departing. Carolina Hurricanes forward Jesper Fast retires after missing season with neck injury

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jesper Fast is retiring after missing this season with a neck injury sustained in the 2023-24 regular-season finale. The 33-year-old Fast announced his decision Monday. He hadn’t played since April 2024 when he was cross-checked from behind into the boards at Columbus. Fast wore a neck brace when he spoke with reporters after the playoffs that year. The team announced in August he would miss the year after having neck surgery. Fast had signed a two-year deal in July 2023.… Continue Reading

Defending champion Panthers head back to Stanley Cup Final with 5-3 Game 5 win over Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carter Verhaeghe broke a tie off a feed from Aleksander Barkov with 7:39 left and the defending champion Florida Panthers advanced to their third straight Stanley Cup Final, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on Wednesday night in Game 5. The Panthers beat the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final for the second time in three seasons. The Panthers will face the winner of the Western final between Dallas and Edmonton, with the Oilers up 3-1 to put them within a win of a rematch with Florida for the Cup. Sam Bennett added an empty-net goal with 54 seconds left by skating down a loose puck straight out of the penalty box after Florida had held up against a critical late power play for the Hurricanes.… Continue Reading
