North Carolina GOP’s proposed map seeks to thwart Democratic incumbent’s reelection

North Carolina GOP’s proposed map seeks to thwart Democratic incumbent’s reelection

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Republican leaders in North Carolina have proposed a new U.S. House district map that could thwart reelection prospects of a Democratic incumbent in the state’s only swing seat. The map was revealed Thursday ahead of next week’s General Assembly session. It is part of an effort to help President Donald Trump secure more GOP seats nationwide ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The new boundaries focus on the 1st District, currently held by Democratic Rep. Don Davis, who narrowly won reelection in 2024. The changes could help Republicans win 11 of North Carolina’s 14 seats. Democrats have criticized the move, calling it an attempt to undermine fair elections.… Continue Reading

Republican North Carolina state Sen. Bobby Hanig announces bid to unseat Democrat Don Davis in 2026

POWELLS POINT, N.C. (AP) — Republican state Sen. Bobby Hanig has announced his bid for a U.S. House seat in North Carolina. The coastal legislator aims to unseat two-term Democratic Rep. Don Davis. Hanig plans to run for the 1st Congressional District, which is the state’s only swing district and spans 22 counties. Davis has already filed federal candidate paperwork for the 2026 race. Another Republican, Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson, has filed as well. The official election filing period is in December, with primaries in early March. Republicans currently hold 10 of North Carolina’s 14 U.S. House seats.… Continue Reading

Democratic incumbent Don Davis wins reelection in North Carolina’s only toss-up congressional race

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Democratic freshman Rep. Don Davis has won reelection, defending his seat from a challenge by Republican opponent Laurie Buckhout in North Carolina’s only toss-up congressional race. Davis faced an uphill battle this year after redistricting by the GOP-controlled state legislature made the 1st Congressional District less blue than it once was. The race that culminated in Davis’ victory attracted millions of advertising dollars from both parties as Davis and Buckhout tried to capitalize on swaying the purple district.… Continue Reading

GOP candidate concedes race to Democratic US Rep Don Davis in NC’s 1st Congressional District

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Republican challenger has conceded after a close contest for North Carolina’s only toss-up congressional district. Laurie Buckhout issued a statement Wednesday morning congratulating incumbent first-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Don Davis in the state’s 1st Congressional District. Davis also issued a statement declaring victory and thanking his supporters. The Associated Press has not yet called the race. The contest in one of the few competitive districts across the Southeast has attracted millions of dollars from both parties. The district extends from Currituck County to a small portion of Granville County, in the northeastern part of the state.… Continue Reading

Fierce North Carolina congressional race could hinge on other names on the ballot

Fierce North Carolina congressional race could hinge on other names on the ballot

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Incumbent Democratic Rep. Don Davis and Republican challenger Laurie Buckhout are locked in a tight race for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. It’s the state’s only competitive race and one of the few toss-ups across the Southeast. Whoever wins in November could help determine control of the U.S. House. But candidates higher on the ticket, such as Vice President Kamala Harris and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, might have an effect on Davis and Buckhout’s performance. Robinson became enmeshed in controversy after CNN reported that he had made several explicit racist and sexual comments on an online pornography forum over a decade ago.… Continue Reading
