Trump gets warm welcome as he watches Army-Navy game alongside key allies, nominees and Daniel Penny

Trump gets warm welcome as he watches Army-Navy game alongside key allies, nominees and Daniel Penny

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Donald Trump huddled with allies and a Republican cause célèbre at the Army-Navy football game. He took in one of the most storied rivalries in college sports while spotlighting his emerging national security team. On Saturday afternoon, Trump joined Vice President-elect JD Vance, embattled Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth, potential backup defense option Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and others for the game outside Washington. Daniel Penny, who was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide this week in the chokehold death of an agitated subway rider in New York, was also a guest of Trump and Vance. Navy beat Army 31-13 in the 125th matchup between the two service academies.… Continue Reading

Vance tells North Carolina residents rebuilding after the hurricane that they haven’t been forgotten

FAIRVIEW, N.C. (AP) — Vice President-elect JD Vance is surveying hurricane damage in western North Carolina in one of his first public appearances since the November election. Vance and his wife, Usha, visited the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, which was flooded with 4 to 6 inches of water in the storm. They heard that roughly a dozen people got walking pneumonia while responding to the hurricane’s destruction and that power outages prevented some first responders from talking with their families. Vance said, “At the height of it, I imagine y’all were working nonstop.” Vance has largely stayed out of the public eye since the election aside from shepherding Trump’s Cabinet nominees around Capitol Hill.… Continue Reading

Walz and Vance go in depth on policy while attacking each other’s running mates in VP debate

Walz and Vance go in depth on policy while attacking each other’s running mates in VP debate

NEW YORK (AP) — In a debate that evoked a calmer era in American politics, Tim Walz and JD Vance on Tuesday went after each other’s running mates and sought to shore up their campaigns’ vulnerabilities at a time of renewed fears of a regional war in the Middle East and sadness over devastation from Hurricane Helene. Both Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota, and Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, focused many of their criticisms on the top of the ticket, as is traditional for VP debates. They each pointed to the crises of the day as reasons for voters to choose Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump.… Continue Reading

What to watch as JD Vance and Tim Walz meet for a vice presidential debate

What to watch as JD Vance and Tim Walz meet for a vice presidential debate

ATLANTA (AP) — The vice presidential debate between Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz will bring together undercards who have spent two months going after each other and the top of each ticket. Tuesday’s matchup might not carry the same stakes as the Sept. 10 debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. But it offers their top lieutenants a fresh opportunity to introduce themselves, vouch for their bosses and fulfill a time-honored role of a running mate in acting as an attack dog. It will be the biggest television and online audience either No. 2 will see before Election Day.… Continue Reading

What polls show about Tim Walz and JD Vance before Tuesday’s VP debate

What polls show about Tim Walz and JD Vance before Tuesday’s VP debate

WASHINGTON (AP) — This year’s vice presidential candidates both entered the spotlight this summer as relative political unknowns — but as they prepare to address their biggest audience yet in next week’s debate, Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance is less popular among voters than his Democratic rival, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The findings of the new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reinforce a challenge for the Republican presidential ticket as voting begins in more and more states. In addition to Vance’s relative unpopularity among voters overall, Democrats are more enthusiastic about Kamala Harris and Walz than Republicans are about Donald Trump and Vance.… Continue Reading

Residents of Springfield, Ohio, hunker down and pray for a political firestorm to blow over

Residents of Springfield, Ohio, hunker down and pray for a political firestorm to blow over

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — In the quiet corners of Springfield, Ohio — out of sight of the drumbeat of politicians, journalists, troopers and newly installed security cameras — people are attempting to carry on. Between the morning bomb sweeps of Springfield’s schools and the near daily afternoon media briefings, a hush comes over the city that residents say is uncanny, haunting even. They’re dismayed at being transformed overnight into a target for the nation’s vitriol. Residents say people are hunkered down and hoping the attention sparked by former President Donald Trump spreading unsubstantiated rumors about the city’s legal Haitian immigrants eating house pets during last week’s presidential debate will blow over.… Continue Reading

Vance and Georgia Gov. Kemp project Republican unity at evangelical event after Trump tensions

Vance and Georgia Gov. Kemp project Republican unity at evangelical event after Trump tensions

ATLANTA (AP) — A leading conservative Christian group is putting on a show of Republican unity in Georgia. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign used a Faith & Freedom Coalition dinner to cement their new détente after years of tensions. And Trump’s running mate JD Vance tried to smooth over differences on abortion policy across the evangelical community ahead of Election Day. Faith & Freedom Coalition co-founder Ralph Reed brought Vance and Kemp to the same stage with a shared focus. That was to advocate for Trump, criticize Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and ignore Trump’s previous attacks on Kemp for his refusal to help overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory.… Continue Reading

Ohio town cancels cultural festival after furor over Haitians

Ohio town cancels cultural festival after furor over Haitians

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio city at the center of a political furor over Haitian migrants has canceled its annual celebration of cultural diversity after days of violent threats closed schools and government offices. Springfield, Ohio, officials announced Monday that a two-day CultureFest starting Sept. 27 is being canceled because of threats and safety concerns. Springfield gained attention recently after former President Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance amplified debunked claims about Haitian immigrants eating domestic pets and waterfowl. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine denounced the false rumors and said Monday that dozens of Ohio State Highway Patrol members will soon be stationed in Springfield schools for added security.… Continue Reading
