AP sources: White House altered record of Biden’s ‘garbage’ remarks despite stenographer concerns

AP sources: White House altered record of Biden’s ‘garbage’ remarks despite stenographer concerns

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House press officials altered the official transcript of a call in which President Joe Biden appeared to take a swipe at supporters of Donald Trump, drawing objections from the federal workers tasked with recording the president’s remarks for posterity. That’s according to two U.S. government officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity and an internal email obtained by The Associated Press. The White House found itself scrambling to respond to a wave of queries from reporters after Biden appeared to refer to Trump supporters as “garbage” during a call with Latino activists. In that moment, there also was a difference of opinion between the press office and the official stenographers on just what Biden said.… Continue Reading

Harris promises to ‘represent all Americans’ after Biden’s remark on Trump supporters and ‘garbage’

Harris promises to ‘represent all Americans’ after Biden’s remark on Trump supporters and ‘garbage’

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Kamala Harris is calling for Americans to “stop pointing fingers at each other” as she tries to push past comments made by President Joe Biden about Donald Trump’s supporters and “garbage.” Harris made her pitch in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Madison, Wisconsin, as part of a blitz of battleground states in the final week before Election Day. She stressed unity and common ground, expanding on her capstone speech Tuesday in Washington, where she laid out what her team called the “closing argument” of her campaign. Harris told reporters, “I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me.”… Continue Reading

Biden suggests Trump supporters are ‘garbage’ after comic’s insult of Puerto Rico

Biden suggests Trump supporters are ‘garbage’ after comic’s insult of Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is reacting to a comic calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” at a Donald Trump rally by saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.” For some, it recalled then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton dismissing Trump supporters in 2016 by evoking a “basket of deplorables.” It was also a departure from Trump’s opponent, Kamala Harris, who has been careful not to insult his supporters and has worked to woo crossover Republicans. Biden later posted on social media that he was referring to the “hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico.”… Continue Reading

Biden admin to provide $750 million to North Carolina-based Wolfspeed for advanced computer chips

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden-Harris administration announced plans to provide up to $750 million in direct funding to Wolfspeed, with the money supporting its new silicon carbide factory in North Carolina that makes the wafers used in advanced computer chips and its factory in Marcy, New York. The new Wolfspeed facility in Siler City could be a critical symbol in this year’s election, as it opened earlier this year in a swing state county that is undergoing rapid economic expansion in large part due to incentives provided by the Biden-Harris administration.… Continue Reading

Biden’s student loan cancellation free to move forward as court order expires

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge in Missouri put a temporary hold on President Joe Biden’s latest student loan cancellation plan on Thursday, slamming the door on hope it would move forward after another judge allowed a pause to expire. Just as it briefly appeared the Biden administration would have a window to push its plan forward, U.S. District Judge Matthew Schelp in Missouri quickly granted an injunction blocking any widespread cancellation. Six Republican-led states requested the injunction just hours earlier, after a federal judge in Georgia decided not to extend a separate order blocking the plan.… Continue Reading

Biden said he hopes to visit Helene-impacted areas this week if it doesn’t impact emergency response

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says he will visit Hurricane Helene-impacted areas this week as long as it does not disrupt rescue and recovery operations. Biden was briefed again on Sunday evening about the impact of the devastating storm on an enormous swath of the Southeast. A North Carolina county that includes the mountain city of Asheville reported earlier Sunday that 30 people were killed due to the storm, pushing the overall death toll to at least 84 people across several states. The president in a brief exchange with reporters described the impact of the storm as “stunning.” He says the administration is giving states “everything we have” to help with their response to the storm.… Continue Reading

Biden and Harris call the Israeli strike killing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah a ‘measure of justice’

Biden and Harris call the Israeli strike killing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah a ‘measure of justice’

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) — President Joe Biden says the Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah was a “measure of justice” for what he called a four-decade “reign of terror.” The comments come after Lebanon’s Hezbollah group confirmed earlier Saturday that Nasrallah, one of the organization’s founders, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut the previous day. Biden also said that Hezbollah under Nasrallah’s watch has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, Israelis and Lebanese. The White House sees the death of Nasrallah as a huge blow to the group. At the same time, the administration has sought to tread carefully as it has tried to contain Israel ’s war with Hamas.… Continue Reading

Biden in farewell U.N. address says peace still possible in conflicts in Mideast and Ukraine

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Joe Biden has delivered his final address as U.S. president to the U.N. General Assembly. Biden used his wide-ranging address on Tuesday to speak to the need to end the Middle East conflict and highlight U.S. and Western allies’ support for Kyiv after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The president insisted the U.S. must not retreat from the world, and said that despite global conflicts, he remains hopeful for the future. His speech comes as Israel and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon edge closer toward all-out war and Israel’s bloody operation against Hamas in Gaza nears the one-year mark.… Continue Reading

Trump blames Biden and Harris’ rhetoric toward him despite his own history of going after rivals

Trump blames Biden and Harris’ rhetoric toward him despite his own history of going after rivals

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is blaming rhetoric from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the apparent assassination attempt on him in Florida despite his own history of going after rivals. This year’s presidential campaign was among the most turbulent in American history even before Sunday’s incident in Florida. Trump was safe after the incident in Florida and praised the Secret Service for protecting him, but didn’t shy away from quickly blaming his opponents. By contrast, Biden steered clear of politics. He said Monday that “thank God” Trump is OK and said the Secret Service “needs more help.”… Continue Reading
