Biden warns in farewell address that an ‘oligarchy’ of ultrarich in US threatens future of democracy

Biden warns in farewell address that an ‘oligarchy’ of ultrarich in US threatens future of democracy

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has used his farewell address to the nation to warn of an “oligarchy” of the ultra-wealthy taking root in the country and of a “tech-industrial complex” that is infringing on Americans’ rights and the future of democracy. Speaking Wednesday from the Oval Office as he prepares to hand over power to President-elect Donald Trump, Biden spotlighted the accumulation of power and wealth in the U.S. among just a small few. The president warned Americans to be on guard for their freedoms and their institutions during a turbulent era of rapid technological and economic change. Biden also called for a constitutional amendment to end immunity for sitting presidents.… Continue Reading

Harris found success with women who have cats, but Trump got the dog owner vote: AP VoteCast

WASHINGTON (AP) — The lead-up to the 2024 election was all about cat owners. But in the end, the dogs had their day. Donald Trump won more than half of voters who own either cats or dogs, and he had with a big assist from dog owners. That’s according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters. Dog owners were much more likely to support Trump over Kamala Harris. Cat owners were evenly split between the two candidates. Harris did end up decisively winning support from women who own a cat but no dog. Past comments by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, about “childless cat ladies” briefly became a campaign issue.… Continue Reading

North Carolina Democrats find electoral success further down the ballot and hope to build on it

North Carolina Democrats find electoral success further down the ballot and hope to build on it

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Democrats fell short again in wresting away swing-state prize North Carolina from Republicans in the presidential election. But their party succeeded with significant state down-ballot victories that builds them hope for the next cycle. Donald Trump narrowly won North Carolina’s electoral votes for the third consecutive election. But Democratic candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general won, and legislative candidates appear to have secured enough victories to end the GOP’s veto-proof majority. State Republican leaders say their party is still doing well. They point to winning five statewide executive branch posts, retaining General Assembly control and continuing recent dominance in statewide appellate court races.… Continue Reading

Kamala Harris raised $1 billion-plus in defeat. She’s still sending persistent appeals to donors

Kamala Harris raised $1 billion-plus in defeat. She’s still sending persistent appeals to donors

ATLANTA (AP) — Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party’s prodigious fundraising operation raised more than $1 billion in her loss to Donald Trump, but the vice president is still pushing donors for more money after the election. Democrats are sending appeals to Harris supporters without expressly asking them to cover any potential debts. They’re enticing would-be donors instead with other matters such as the president-elect’s picks for his upcoming administration and a handful of pending congressional contests where ballots are still being tallied. The party is flooding Harris’ lucrative email donor list with near-daily appeals aimed at small-dollar donors.… Continue Reading

Young Black and Latino men say they chose Trump because of the economy and jobs. Here’s how and why

Young Black and Latino men say they chose Trump because of the economy and jobs. Here’s how and why

WASHINGTON (AP) — Black and Latino voters moved toward Republican Donald Trump in this year’s presidential election, and some of the biggest shifts were among men under age 45, and that helped expand his margin over Democrat Kamala Harris. That’s according to AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 120,000 voters. The vice president’s losses with these groups largely became Trump’s gains as he locked down his traditionally older, white base and slightly expanded into a winning coalition. A combination of the economy and jobs was pinpointed as the issue voters felt was the most important problem the country faced. That was the case, too, for Black and Hispanic voters.… Continue Reading

‘Saturday Night Live’ to Trump: ‘We’ve been with you all along’

‘Saturday Night Live’ to Trump: ‘We’ve been with you all along’

The first episode of “Saturday Night Live” since the election of Donald Trump struck a somber tone at the beginning. Cast members, most of them women and minorities, declared they found the new reality “horrifying.” But then came a swerve, as cast member Keenan Thompson told Trump, “We’ve been with you all along.” Saying they all voted for Trump, they promised only flattering portrayals. Cast member James Austin Johnson, who plays the former and future president, came out as a muscle-bound Trump. Show host and standup comic Bill Burr says he is “so psyched that this stupid election is finally over. Everybody knew who they were going to vote for four years ago.”… Continue Reading

Unexpectedly, news outlets wind up having a relatively traditional election night experience

Unexpectedly, news outlets wind up having a relatively traditional election night experience

After months of reporting on what polls described as a remarkably close race, news outlets finally have the chance to report on actual results. But it turned out to be relatively traditional experience — from the first report of exit poll results, the night moved inexorably in Donald Trump’s direction and away from Kamala Harris. Broadcast networks, cable news networks and digital news sites were all pouring efforts into reporting on the results. They knew going in that it might take much time for the picture to become clear. In 2020, President Joe Biden wasn’t declared the victor over Trump until the Saturday after Election Day.… Continue Reading

Harris says nation must accept election results while urging supporters to keep fighting

Harris says nation must accept election results while urging supporters to keep fighting

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kamala Harris is expected to speak on Wednesday afternoon after losing the presidential election to Donald Trump. A senior adviser to the vice president says Harris called Trump on Wednesday afternoon to concede the election and congratulate him on his victory. Harris trailed Trump in every battleground state, a profound rejection by American voters. In a bitter footnote, as the sitting vice president Harris is expected to oversee Congress’ ceremonial certification of the election. In the campaign, she faced steep odds after replacing Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket with only 107 days until the end. Biden plans to address the election results on Thursday. The White House said Biden spoke with Trump on Wednesday and he invited the president-elect to meet with him soon.… Continue Reading

AP VoteCast: Voter anxiety over the economy and a desire for change return Trump to the White House

AP VoteCast: Voter anxiety over the economy and a desire for change return Trump to the White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — A disaffected electorate wanted former President Donald Trump to return to the White House, a blatant rejection of Vice President Kamala Harris and her nearly four years with President Joe Biden. The Republican’s victory came from a public so put off by America’s trajectory that they welcomed his brash and disruptive approach. About 3 in 10 voters said they wanted total upheaval in how the country is run, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters nationwide. And even if they weren’t looking for something that dramatic, more than half of voters overall said they wanted to see substantial change.… Continue Reading

Polls in swing states begin to close as sharply divided America chooses between Harris and Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided America weighed a stark choice for the nation’s future Tuesday as a presidential campaign marked by upheaval and rancor approached its finale. Voters were deciding whether to send Republican Donald Trump back to the White House or make Vice President Kamala Harris the first female president. Polls closed Tuesday in Georgia and…… Continue Reading
