Biden issues ban on offshore oil and gas drilling in most federal waters. Trump vows to undo it

Biden issues ban on offshore oil and gas drilling in most federal waters. Trump vows to undo it

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is moving to ban new offshore oil and gas drilling in most U.S. coastal waters. It’s a last-minute effort to block possible action by the incoming Trump administration to expand offshore drilling. Biden’s term expires in two weeks. He says he is using authority under federal law to protect offshore areas along the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and portions of Alaska’s Northern Bering Sea from future oil and natural gas leasing. Biden said his decision is backed by coastal communities who know that offshore drilling could cause irreversible environmental damage. President-elect Donald Trump says the decision will be reversed after he takes office Jan. 20.… Continue Reading

J.T. Poston ends long day in Las Vegas with 3rd career PGA Tour title

LAS VEGAS (AP) — J.T. Poston is a winner again on the PGA Tour after holding on at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. Poston built a three-shot lead Sunday morning to complete the third round in the wind-delayed tournament. He led by four shots with three holes to play. Doug Ghim made him sweat it out. Poston had to make a 4-foot par putt on the last hole for a 67 and his one-shot victory. Ghim had his best career finish on tour. The victory was the third of Poston’s career. He was playing for the first time since August.… Continue Reading

Las Vegas says goodbye to the Tropicana with a flashy casino implosion

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sin City blew a kiss goodbye to the Tropicana in an elaborate implosion that leveled two hotel towers. The celebration in Las Vegas early Wednesday included a fireworks display. It was the first casino implosion in nearly a decade for a city that loves fresh starts. The Tropicana closed in April after 67 years to make room for a new baseball stadium for the relocating Oakland Athletics. Once known as the “Tiffany of the Strip” for its opulence, the Tropicana was a frequent haunt of the legendary Rat Pack. Its past under the mob has long cemented its place in Las Vegas lore.… Continue Reading

Pete Rose found home in Las Vegas before nation began to embrace sports betting

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Pete Rose found a home in Las Vegas, where acceptance wasn’t a problem. Baseball’s career hits leader died Monday in that city at age 83. The man known as Charlie Hustle for his relentless play on the basepaths picked a place that embraced legalized sports betting long before most of the rest of the nation caught on. Rose was a regular at autograph sessions throughout the Las Vegas area. He engaged with those who approached him to talk about his glory days with the Reds and Phillies and maybe even to commiserate about why he wasn’t eligible for the Hall of Fame.… Continue Reading

Andy Dalton passes for 319 yards and 3 TDs to lead Panthers past Raiders 36-22 for first win

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Andy Dalton gave the Panthers the quarterback play they’ve been sorely lacking, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns to lead Carolina past the Las Vegas Raiders 36-22. Promoted to the starting job in place of the ineffective Bryce Young, Dalton guided the Panthers to their first win and moved to 4-0 lifetime against the Raiders. Carolina is 3-17 going back to last season. The Panthers were blown out the first two weeks this year, prompting coach Dave Canales to bench Young. Dalton completed 26 of 37 passes and becoming the first NFL quarterback this season to post a 300-yard, three-TD performance.… Continue Reading
