Another recount won’t be ordered in a North Carolina court race, but protests are ahead

Another recount won’t be ordered in a North Carolina court race, but protests are ahead

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Another recount won’t be ordered by North Carolina election officials in a close state Supreme Court race after a partial hand recount failed to suggest the trailing Republican candidate could overtake the Democratic incumbent. Associate Justice Allison Riggs maintained a 734-vote lead over Jefferson Griffin following a machine recount completed last week. Griffin then asked for partial hand recount. That wrapped up Tuesday and actually had Riggs picking up more votes than Griffin. So the State Board of Elections won’t order a complete hand recount. The election hasn’t been resolved. The state board is scheduled on Wednesday to hear arguments on protests filed by Griffin and GOP legislative candidates.… Continue Reading

Supreme Court seems likely to uphold Tennessee’s ban on medical treatments for transgender minors

Supreme Court seems likely to uphold Tennessee’s ban on medical treatments for transgender minors

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hearing a high-profile culture-war clash, the Supreme Court on Wednesday seemed likely to uphold Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. The justices’ decision, not expected for several months, could affect similar laws enacted by another 25 states and a range of other efforts to regulate the lives of transgender people, including which sports competitions they can join and which bathrooms they can use. The case is being weighed by a conservative-dominated court after a presidential election in which Donald Trump and his allies promised to roll back protections for transgender people. The Biden administration’s top Supreme Court lawyer warned a decision favorable to Tennessee also could be used to justify nationwide restrictions on transgender healthcare for minors.… Continue Reading

Penn State wins trademark case over retailer’s use of vintage logos, images

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Penn State has won a closely watched trademark fight over an online retailer’s use of its vintage logos and images. A Pennsylvania jury awarded Penn State $28,000 in damages earlier this week over products made and sold by the firms Vintage Brand and Sportswear Inc. Penn State accused them of selling “counterfeit” clothing and accessories. The defendants said their website makes clear they are not affiliated with Penn State. At least a dozen other schools have sued the defendants on similar grounds, but the Pennsylvania case was the first to go to trial.… Continue Reading

Infowars auction could determine whether Alex Jones is kicked off its platforms

Infowars auction could determine whether Alex Jones is kicked off its platforms

It’s auction day for Alex Jones’ Infowars. The Infowars studio and most other assets of the conspiracy theorist’s company were expected to be sold off Wednesday. The proceeds will help pay the nearly $1.5 billion in defamation lawsuit judgments Jones owes families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut for calling the massacre a hoax. Jones says Infowars could be shut down if opponents win the bidding. Sealed bids were scheduled to be opened Wednesday morning. There was no immediate announcement of the results. Jones says he has set up a new studio, websites and social media accounts just in case.… Continue Reading

Federal judge denies motion to recognize Michael Jordan’s NASCAR teams as a chartered organization

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A federal judge has denied a motion by two NASCAR teams — one owned by NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan — to be recognized as chartered teams as they proceed in an antitrust lawsuit against the stock car series and chairman Jim France. The motion was signed by federal judge Frank Whitney of the United States District Court of Western North Carolina in Charlotte at the exact same time NASCAR executives were giving their annual “State of the Sport” address at Phoenix Raceway. The decision came down just hours before Cup cars hit the track for the first practice session of championship weekend.… Continue Reading

6 people accuse Diddy of sexual assault in new lawsuits, including man who was 16 at the time

NEW YORK (AP) — A new wave of lawsuits filed Monday accuses Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping men and women and molesting a 16-year-old boy. At least six lawsuits were filed against the hip-hop mogul in federal court in Manhattan. They were filed anonymously, two by women identified as Jane Does and four by men identified as John Does. The accusers are part of what their lawyers say is a group of more than 100 alleged victims who are in the process of taking legal action against Combs in the wake of his sex trafficking arrest last month.… Continue Reading

NC joins a dozen states suing TikTok, claiming its platform is addictive and harms the mental health of children

NEW YORK (AP) — More than a dozen states and the District of Columbia have filed lawsuits against TikTok on Tuesday, alleging the popular short-form video app is harming youth mental health by designing its platform to be addictive to kids. At the heart of each lawsuit is the TikTok algorithm, which powers what users see on the platform by populating the app’s main “For You” feed with content tailored to people’s interests. The lawsuits also emphasize design features that they say make children addicted to the platform.… Continue Reading

UFC reaches $375 million settlement on one class-action lawsuit, another one remains pending

UFC reaches $375 million settlement on one class-action lawsuit, another one remains pending

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The UFC reached another settlement with one of the two class-action litigants. It agreed to pay the former fighters $375 million after a previous agreement was thrown out by a Nevada district judge. Judge Richard Boulware in July dismissed a $335 million settlement with two antitrust lawsuits. That included one brought by Cung Le. The new agreement by UFC parent company TKO Group Holdings is with Le. He filed his lawsuit in 2014. The court still must approve the terms. The UFC still has not reached an agreement with Kajan Johnson.… Continue Reading
