Families of wildfire victims mired in grief, questioning what more could have been done

Families of wildfire victims mired in grief, questioning what more could have been done

Many families in California are full of grief and questions about what more they could have done to save their loved ones from the deadly wildfires. Experts say these survivors are victims themselves. The fires that swept through the Los Angeles area this month were fast-moving and fierce and there just wasn’t more they could do. But that doesn’t ease the pain or the questions for the families of the more than two dozen killed, some unable to escape, others unaware of what was coming, having survived other blazes unscathed. Despite reassurances, they can’t help but second-guess if they could have done more.… Continue Reading

Prosecutors seek resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez in 1989 killings of their parents

Prosecutors seek resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez in 1989 killings of their parents

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors are recommending that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the 1989 killings of their parents in Beverly Hills. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has announced during a Thursday news conference that his office would recommend the brothers be sentenced to 50 years to life. But he says their ages at the time of the crimes mean they will be eligible for parole immediately. The brothers were sentenced in 1996 to life in prison without parole. Prosecutors must now seek court approval for resentencing. The brothers admitted to the crime but said they feared their parents were about to kill them to prevent anyone from finding out that Jose Menendez had abused Erik for years.… Continue Reading

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tommy Edman and Will Smith homered to send Shohei Ohtani into the World Series for the first time, and the Los Angeles Dodgers eliminated the New York Mets with a 10-5 victory in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series. The Dodgers clinched their record 25th NL pennant and first at home since 1988, when they beat the Mets in seven games. They moved on to their 22nd World Series — 13th in Los Angeles — and first since 2020, when they beat Tampa Bay during the pandemic-delayed season. Next up for Ohtani and company is Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees, who are back in the World Series for the 41st time. Game 1 is Friday at Dodger Stadium.… Continue Reading
