COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say more than half of the monkeys bred for medical research that escaped from a compound in South Carolina have been recovered unharmed. Police said Sunday that another 24 monkeys were captured, bringing the total number recovered to 25. Forty-three monkeys made a break for it Wednesday after an employee at the Alpha Genesis facility didn’t fully lock a door as she fed and checked on them. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Officials say one of 43 monkeys bred for medical research that escaped a compound in South Carolina has been recovered unharmed. Police said in a statement on Saturday that many of the others are still located a few yards from the property. Officials say the Rhesus macaques made a break for it Wednesday after an employee at the Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee didn’t fully lock a door as she fed and checked on them. The monkeys are about the size of a cat. Alpha Genesis, federal health officials and the police all say the monkeys pose no risk to public health. Officials say the Rhesus macaques made a break for it Wednesday after an employee at the Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee didn’t fully lock a door as she fed and checked on them. The monkeys are about the size of a cat. They are all females weighing about 7 pounds. 43 monkeys escape from a South Carolina medical lab. Police say there is no serious danger

YEMASSEE, S.C. (AP) – A police chief in South Carolina says there is no “almost no danger” to the public after 43 monkeys escaped from a compound used for medical research. Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander says the monkeys from the Alpha Genesis faculty aren’t infected with any diseases and are harmless and probably skittish. Police say the female Rhesus macaque primates weighing about 7 pounds escaped Wednesday when a new employee didn’t fully shut an enclosure. Authorities say Alpha Genesis employees can see the monkeys and are setting traps and using thermal imaging cameras to capture them.
