Edwards and Rudd walked away from NASCAR and never looked back. Their reunion is at the Hall of Fame

Edwards and Rudd walked away from NASCAR and never looked back. Their reunion is at the Hall of Fame

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carl Edwards and Ricky Rudd had very little overlap in their respective NASCAR careers. Edwards only entered the the elite Cup Series in 2004 — a mere 67 races before Rudd ended his 32-year career — so the two never got a chance to know one another. But two things tie Edwards and Rudd together — when each decided to retire, both essentially vanished from the NASCAR scene, and, on Friday night they will return to their old racing community as inductees of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Edwards and Rudd are among five being celebrated Friday night as the newest members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.… Continue Reading

NASCAR champion Joey Logano tunes out critics and insists playoff format is ‘very entertaining’

NASCAR champion Joey Logano tunes out critics and insists playoff format is ‘very entertaining’

NASCAR driver Joey Logano has found a way to tune out months of criticism surrounding his third championship. He says “I can’t hear it because my trophies, they kind of, like, echo around me.” Logano’s title in November sparked debate about whether NASCAR’s current playoff format is the best way to determine the series champion. Logano got two huge breaks in 2024. But NASCAR says no tweaks will be made to the championship format this year. Instead, officials plan to study it for another year. Logano, not surprisingly since he’s won two of the last three Cup Series titles, welcomed the decision.… Continue Reading

Greg Biffle wins Myers Brothers Award for humanitarian aid relief efforts following Hurricane Helene

Greg Biffle wins Myers Brothers Award for humanitarian aid relief efforts following Hurricane Helene

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle has been named the recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association’s Myers Brothers Award for his humanitarian aid efforts earlier this summer in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Before most of the country knew the devastation the hurricane dealt Western North Carolina and East Tennessee, Biffle had already boarded his personal helicopter, delivering aid to the flooded, remote region that was cut off from the rest of the world. Biffle’s unselfish efforts as part of Operation Helidrop spearheaded NASCAR’s mobilization to help those who desperately needed food, water, medicine, clothing and housing.… Continue Reading

Joey Logano wins Phoenix finale for 3rd NASCAR Cup championship in 1-2 finish for Team Penske

Joey Logano wins Phoenix finale for 3rd NASCAR Cup championship in 1-2 finish for Team Penske

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Joey Logano won his third NACAR championship on Sunday with a relentless drive at Phoenix Raceway that gave Team Penske its third major motorsports title in less than a month. Logano held off Penske teammate Ryan Blaney over the final 20 laps to beat him to the Cup Series title by 0.330 seconds. Blaney was trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Jimmie Johnson won five straight from 2006 to 2010. Instead, Logano became the 10th driver in NASCAR history to win three or more championships and broke a tie with Kyle Busch as the only active drivers with multiple titles.… Continue Reading

Bobby Allison, NASCAR Hall of Famer and 3-time Daytona 500 winner, dies at 86

Bobby Allison, founder of racing’s “Alabama Gang” and a NASCAR Hall of Famer, died Saturday. He was 86. NASCAR released a statement from Allison’s family that said he died at home in Mooresville, North Carolina. A cause of death wasn’t given, but Allison had been in declining health for years. Allison moved to fourth on NASCAR’s Cup Series victory list last month when chairman Jim France recognized him as the winner of the Meyers Brothers Memorial at Bowman Gray Stadium in North Carolina in 1971. Allison was inducted into NASCAR’s second Hall of Fame class, in 2011. He was a five-time NASCAR champion and a three-time winner of the Daytona 500.… Continue Reading

Federal judge denies motion to recognize Michael Jordan’s NASCAR teams as a chartered organization

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A federal judge has denied a motion by two NASCAR teams — one owned by NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan — to be recognized as chartered teams as they proceed in an antitrust lawsuit against the stock car series and chairman Jim France. The motion was signed by federal judge Frank Whitney of the United States District Court of Western North Carolina in Charlotte at the exact same time NASCAR executives were giving their annual “State of the Sport” address at Phoenix Raceway. The decision came down just hours before Cup cars hit the track for the first practice session of championship weekend.… Continue Reading

NASCAR’s championship weekend shrouded in off-track drama from lawsuit to alleged race manipulation

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — NASCAR heads into its championship weekend locked into a federal antitrust lawsuit with NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Its officiating has been under months-long scrutiny, and this week it issued a wave of hefty fines for alleged race manipulation in the final playoff qualifier. Other than that? Three champions will be crowned starting Friday at Phoenix Raceway. But those national series races have become a sideshow to the off-track drama that has engulfed NASCAR the last several months. Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick will race for the championship Sunday.… Continue Reading

Joey Logano seizes fresh chance in NASCAR playoffs to take spot in championship finale

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Knocked out of the playoffs this time last week, Joey Logano seized on his reversal of fortune to become the first driver locked into NASCAR’s championship finale. Logano was below the cutline and eliminated from the eight-driver field when he left Charlotte Motor Speedway last Sunday. But when Alex Bowman’s car failed post-race inspection, Bowman was disqualified and Logano reinstated to the playoff field. The only two-time Cup champion in the playoff field, Logano passed Daniel Suarez with five laps remaining Sunday for his fourth career victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.… Continue Reading
