No. 1 Kansas blows big lead, holds off No. 9 North Carolina in tussle of hoops heavyweights

No. 1 Kansas blows big lead, holds off No. 9 North Carolina in tussle of hoops heavyweights

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Top-ranked Kansas blew a 20-point first-half lead, then had to rally itself in the closing minutes for a 92-89 victory over No. 9 North Carolina on Friday night. The game ended when the Tar Heels’ Elliot Cadeau missed a 3-pointer from right in front of his own bench as time expired. It was just the 13th time that two programs with a combined 10 national championships had met on the hardwood, and the first on either campus since the Tar Heels won in Allen Fieldhouse in 1960. Hunter Dickinson made sure there would be no repeat, scoring the go-ahead basket with 1:15 remaining and finishing with 20 points in the game.… Continue Reading

No. 9 Tar Heels visit No. 1 Kansas in only second on-campus showdown between college hoops titans

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — North Carolina and Kansas will be meeting for only the 13th time in their storied histories on Friday night, and for only the second time, the ninth-ranked Tar Heels will be playing the top-ranked Jayhawks on campus. The game at Allen Fieldhouse is the first of a rare home-and-home series that sees Kansas heading to Chapel Hill in November 2025. While the two bluebloods have rarely played, their 12 matchups have carried plenty of weight. Seven have been in the NCAA Tournament, five have been in the Final Four and, in 1957 and 2022, the two played for the national championship.… Continue Reading

College athletes are getting paid and fans are starting to see a growing share of the bill

College athletes are getting paid and fans are starting to see a growing share of the bill

Winning at big-time college sports has never been free. But in a rapidly changing era in which players are allowed to earn money, it’s never been more clear that fans will be picking up a bigger part of the tab. Athletic directors are making that clear, by sending letters to boosters detailing the increase in expenses that will come once many schools start sharing revenue with players under the terms of a lawsuit settlement. At other schools, ticket prices could be going up while others are adding fees to tuition to help cover the costs.… Continue Reading

N.C. State blasts Stanford 59-28 behind explosive offense led by CJ Bailey

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Hollywood Smothers and Jordan Waters each rushed for two touchdowns, and quarterback CJ Bailey added three more while being nearly perfect through the air as North Carolina State crushed Stanford 59-28. The Wolfpack ended a two-game home losing streak while handing Stanford its sixth consecutive defeat. North Carolina State scored three touchdowns on four plays, capped by Waters’ 94-yard run that was the second-longest rushing TD in school history. Stanford also lost quarterback Ashton Daniels to injury.… Continue Reading

Hampton, Jones have big days, Tar Heels end skid 41-14 over Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Omarion Hampton ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and J.J. Jones caught five passes for 129 yards and a pair of scores as North Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak with a 41-14 win over Virginia. The Tar Heel buried a month’s worth of frustration by dominating the second and third quarters to end their longest losing streak since 2018. Virginia endured a dismal offensive day, not scoring a touchdown until backup quarterback Tony Muskett connected with JR Wilson for a 68-yard score with 10:07 left and the outcome no longer in doubt. The Tar Heels outgained Virginia 428 yards to 288 and held the Cavaliers to a 6-for-16 showing on third down. Virginia, loser of three in a row, struggled to block North Carolina, which racked up 10 sacks.… Continue Reading

North Carolina football player Tylee Craft dies from rare lung cancer at 23

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina football player Tylee Craft has died from a rare form of lung cancer. Coach Mack Brown made the announcement in his postgame news conference following the Tar Heels’ loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Craft was 23. Craft played a reserve role in 2020 and 2021 before his diagnosis in March 2022.… Continue Reading

The ACC believes it should earn more NCAA Tournament berths. It’s time to make that happen

The ACC believes it should earn more NCAA Tournament berths. It’s time to make that happen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference is trying to bolster its chances of getting more bids to the NCAA Tournament. League coaches and officials have spent months trying to change perception of the ACC’s strength. That comes after the ACC has managed just five bids in each of past three men’s tournaments. Yet the league continues to outperform every other league. That includes having four different teams reach the Final Four in the past three seasons. Some of the work includes having teams bolster their nonconference schedules to strengthen their NCAA resumes.… Continue Reading

NCAA’s $2.78 billion settlement with colleges to allow athlete payments gets preliminary approval

A judge has given preliminary approval to the $2.78 billion legal settlement that figures to transform college sports. U.S District Judge Claudia Wilken released an order Monday setting a timeline for a deal that would put millions of dollars into the pockets of college athletes, who can begin applying for payment on Oct. 18. A final hearing is set for April 2025. If finalized, the deal would allow the biggest schools to establish a pool of about $21.5 million in the first year to distribute to athletes, who would still be able to cut name, image and likeness deals with outside groups.… Continue Reading
