Panthers WR Adam Thielen will miss at least 4 weeks after being placed on IR with hamstring injury

Panthers WR Adam Thielen will miss at least 4 weeks after being placed on IR with hamstring injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers will be without wide receiver Adam Thielen for at least four weeks. The veteran was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a hamstring injury. Thielen was injured while extending to make a diving touchdown catch near the end of the second quarter of Carolina’s 36-22 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The 34-year-old did not return in the second half. Jonathan Mingo, a second-round pick in 2023, or rookie first-round pick Xavier Legette will likely replace Thielen in the starting lineup on Sunday when the Panthers host the Cincinnati Bengals.… Continue Reading

Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre says he has Parkinson’s disease

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre told a congressional committee Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Favre made the announcement as part of his testimony about a welfare misspending scandal in Mississippi. Favre does not face criminal charges, but he has repaid just over $1 million in speaking fees funded by a welfare program in the state. He was also an investor a biotech company with ties to the case that said it was developing concussion drugs. It is unclear if Favre’s disease is connected to his football career or head injuries.… Continue Reading

Andy Dalton’s success in win over the Raiders increases concern about Bryce Young

Andy Dalton’s success in win over the Raiders increases concern about Bryce Young

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers’ stunning 36-22 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders showed that coach Dave Canales was correct when he said Andy Dalton gives his team the best chance to win. At the same time it increases concern about Bryce Young’s ability right now to lead the team and raises even more questions about his chances of being a franchise quarterback. Dalton did all the things the ineffective Young hasn’t been able to do for most of his brief NFL career: force defenses to respect the passing game, move the Panthers down the field and score points. Dalton finished 26 of 37 for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Young hadn’t thrown a touchdown passes in his previous four starts; Dalton had three before halftime.… Continue Reading

Andy Dalton passes for 319 yards and 3 TDs to lead Panthers past Raiders 36-22 for first win

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Andy Dalton gave the Panthers the quarterback play they’ve been sorely lacking, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns to lead Carolina past the Las Vegas Raiders 36-22. Promoted to the starting job in place of the ineffective Bryce Young, Dalton guided the Panthers to their first win and moved to 4-0 lifetime against the Raiders. Carolina is 3-17 going back to last season. The Panthers were blown out the first two weeks this year, prompting coach Dave Canales to bench Young. Dalton completed 26 of 37 passes and becoming the first NFL quarterback this season to post a 300-yard, three-TD performance.… Continue Reading

Panthers QB Bryce Young says he was surprised to learn he’d been benched, needs to get better

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young says he was surprised to learn from head coach Dave Canales that he had been benched and accepted blame for the team’s struggles on the field. He says the news was not something he was expecting but added that he has respect for Canales and the organization. Young is 2-16 as an NFL starter since he arrived in Carolina amid high expectations after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2023 draft. The Panthers are 0-2 and have not been competitive in either game this season. They have been outscored 73-13. Andy Dalton will start Sunday at Las Vegas.… Continue Reading

Coach Dave Canales says Panthers aren’t considering trading QB Young after benching 2023 No. 1 pick

Coach Dave Canales says Panthers aren’t considering trading QB Young after benching 2023 No. 1 pick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales said he “absolutely” believes Bryce Young can still be a franchise quarterback, adding that the team has no plans to trade the 2023 No. 1 overall pick after benching him earlier this week. Canales said he believes the Panthers have a great situation at quarterback. Andy Dalton will start Sunday’s Week 3 game at Las Vegas. The 36-year-old journeyman quarterback walked out to the practice field on Wednesday with a big smile on his face, stopping along the way to sign a football for a fan. He took all of the first-team reps while Young was relegated to running the scout team.… Continue Reading

Dave Canales’ decision to bench Bryce Young raises questions about No. 1 pick’s future in Carolina

Dave Canales’ decision to bench Bryce Young raises questions about No. 1 pick’s future in Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Dave Canales’ decision to bench Bryce Young raises serious questions about the 2023 No. 1 overall pick’s future with the Carolina Panthers. Canales made the move on Monday, less than 24 hours after saying in his postgame news conference that Young would remain the team’s starter despite another dreadful performance in a 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Canales said he changed his mind after watching video Sunday night and consulting with the front office. There is no indication that this is a temporary move. That means the Panthers could be looking to draft a quarterback in the first round again next year.… Continue Reading

Bryce Young benched by Panthers after QB’s rough start; Andy Dalton will start vs. Raiders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have benched 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young after the second-year quarterback’s rough start to the season. Andy Dalton will take over as the starter for Carolina’s next game on Sunday at Las Vegas. Panthers head coach Dave Canales said he made the decision after watching game film from Sunday’s 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.… Continue Reading

Justin Herbert throws 2 TDs to Quentin Johnston; Chargers hammer Panthers 26-3 to remain unbeaten

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Justin Herbert threw two touchdown passes to Quentin Johnston, J.K Dobbins ran for 131 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown, and the Los Angeles Chargers drubbed the Carolina Panthers 26-3. The unbeaten Chargers methodically wore down the Panthers, piling up 219 yards on the ground while holding Carolina to just 159 total yards and seven first downs. Second-year quarterback Bryce Young had another miserable game, finishing 18 of 26 passing for 84 yards with one interception and was booed repeatedly by the home crowd while falling to 2-16 as a starter. The Panthers have been outscored 73-13 this season.… Continue Reading
