Maple Leafs beat Hurricanes 5-1 to wrap up 6-game trip with 3rd straight victory

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Joseph Woll made 22 saves, Bobby McMann scored twice and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Thursday night to complete a six-game trip with their third straight victory and fourth in five games. Auston Matthews, Scott Laughton and Matthew Knies also scored for Toronto. Seth Jarvis scored for Carolina, and Frederik Andersen stopped 18 shots. Playing the fourth game of seven-game homestand, the Hurricanes had been off since beating Calgary 1-0 in overtime Sunday night for their second straight victory. McMann opened the scoring at 53 seconds of the first on Toronto’s first shot on goal, beating Andersen with a one-timer from the high slot. Jarvis scores a hat trick as Hurricanes pull away in third period to beat Jets 5-1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored three goals and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 in a matchup that featured a pair of rookie goalies. Jarvis clinched the hat trick on an empty-net goal with 1:03 to play — one of four Carolina goals in the final 8 1/2 minutes. Jordan Martinook broke a third-period tie before Jarvis’ second tally of the game came just 47 seconds later. Shayne Gostisbehere and Andrei Svechnikov each provided two assists. Alexander Nikishin completed the scoring. Mark Scheifele scored his team-best 13th goal for the Jets. Brandon Bussi made 12 saves for Carolina. Carolina rookies Legault, Nystrom make team history by scoring 1st NHL points in win over Sabres

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Rookie defensemen Charles Alexis Legault and Joel Nystrom picked up their first NHL points in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. It marks the first time in the Hurricanes’ team history that two defensemen posted their first points in the same game. And, it was the fourth time in Carolina history — since the relocation from Hartford — that any two players recorded their first points in a game. Heiskanen scores twice as Stars rally to beat Hurricanes 3-2

DALLAS (AP) — Miro Heiskanen scored his second goal of the game during a four-on-three power play with 8:42 remaining and the Dallas Stars beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. The Stars trailed 2-0 after the first period before scoring the final three goals of the game. Carolina led 1-0 five minutes into the game on Jackson Blake’s unassisted goal. The Hurricanes increased their lead with 10.3 seconds remaining in the first period when Sebastian Aho scored. Dallas tied it at 2-2 on Sam Steel’s power-play goal. Barbashev has goal and assist as Golden Knights beat Hurricanes 4-1

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ivan Barbashev had a goal and an assist, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1. Jack Eichel, Pavel Dorofeyev and William Karlsson also scored and Mitch Marner had two assists for Vegas, which still hasn’t lost in regulation (5-0-2). Akira Schmid stopped 23 shots after relieving Adin Hill, who made four saves before he left the game midway through the first period with an injury. Schmid improved to 4-0-0 this season. Dorofeyev is tied with Ottawa’s Shane Pinto and Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele for the league lead with seven goals, while Eichel leads the league with 16 points. Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes, his second of the season. Jarvis scores in OT, Hurricanes recover to beat Kings and stay undefeated

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored 1:45 into overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes extended their undefeated start despite giving up a three-goal lead in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Jordan Staal had two goals, Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored, and Brandon Bussi made 25 saves for the Hurricanes. Kevin Fiala tied it up midway through the third period for the Kings, who have lost four straight. Trevor Moore and Andrei Kuzmenko also scored, and Anton Forsberg made 36 saves. Hurricanes defenseman Slavin exits early against Flyers, status for road trip unclear

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for a long road trip with concerns about the status of defenseman Jaccob Slavin. He missed a large portion of the third period and all of overtime in Saturday night’s 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said the team will know more about his status on Monday. Slavin logged less than 4 1/2 minutes of ice time following the second period Saturday night. Jarvis scores winner late in OT as Hurricanes top Flyers 4-3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored with 16.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Jarvis also scored the go-ahead goal in Carolina’s season-opening win over New Jersey. Jarvis, who has three goals this season, is building off his 2024-25 season when he was the team’s leading goal scorer. Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes. Old guard still runs the Metropolitan Division, though times could be changing soon

Times are changing in the Metropolitan Division, even if many of the top teams remain the most legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. Washington coming off finishing a distant first has much of the same team back with Alex Ovechkin going into what could be his final NHL season at age 40. Carolina added one of the top free agents in Nikolaj Ehlers to a core that has been to the Eastern Conference final two of the past three years. Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signs 8-year, $45 million contract extension

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signed an eight-year, $45 million contract extension Thursday that will begin with the 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old Blake, the son of former NHL forward Jason Blake, had 17 goals and 17 assists in 80 regular-season games last season and added three goals and three assists in 15 playoff games. The 5-foot-11 right wing was drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round in 2021. He played two seasons at the University of North Dakota.… Continue Reading
