Kamala Harris says Trump’s comment on women ‘is offensive to everybody’

Kamala Harris says Trump’s comment on women ‘is offensive to everybody’

PHOENIX (AP) — Kamala Harris says Donald Trump’s comment that he would protect women whether they “like it or not” shows that the Republican presidential nominee does not understand women’s rights to make decisions about their own lives. Harris spoke Thursday in Wisconsin before setting out to spend the day campaigning in the Western battleground states of Arizona and Nevada. The remarks by Trump come as he has struggled to connect with women voters and as Harris courts women in both parties with a message centered on freedom. She’s making the pitch that women should be free to make decisions about their bodies and that if Trump is elected, more restrictions will follow.… Continue Reading

Donald Trump gambles with late-stage trips to Democratic New Mexico and Virginia

Donald Trump gambles with late-stage trips to Democratic New Mexico and Virginia

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Donald Trump is traveling to New Mexico and Virginia in the campaign’s final days. It’s a risky detour from the seven battleground states to spend time in places where Republican presidential candidates haven’t won in decades. The former president campaigned in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Thursday during a swing that will also take him to the battleground states of Arizona and Nevada. He’ll be in Salem, Virginia, on Saturday. The Trump team is projecting optimism and thinks he can be competitive against Democrat Kamala Harris in New Mexico and Virginia.… Continue Reading

Ping! Harris and Trump are blowing up your phones with political texts in campaign’s last days

Ping! Harris and Trump are blowing up your phones with political texts in campaign’s last days

WASHINGTON (AP) — Across the U.S., people’s phones are pinging with text messages from Donald Trump, Kamala Harris and their allies. Both sides are working the texting pipeline aggressively in the presidential campaign’s last days. It’s a cheap and easy way to reach millions of potential donors and voters. It’s also an aggravation for many. At recent Harris and Trump rallies, some of the attendees said enough already. But the texting torrent is not bound to let up before Election Day next week, if it even does then.… Continue Reading

Harris promises to ‘represent all Americans’ after Biden’s remark on Trump supporters and ‘garbage’

Harris promises to ‘represent all Americans’ after Biden’s remark on Trump supporters and ‘garbage’

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Kamala Harris is calling for Americans to “stop pointing fingers at each other” as she tries to push past comments made by President Joe Biden about Donald Trump’s supporters and “garbage.” Harris made her pitch in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Madison, Wisconsin, as part of a blitz of battleground states in the final week before Election Day. She stressed unity and common ground, expanding on her capstone speech Tuesday in Washington, where she laid out what her team called the “closing argument” of her campaign. Harris told reporters, “I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me.”… Continue Reading

Donald Trump boards a garbage truck to draw attention to Biden remark

Donald Trump boards a garbage truck to draw attention to Biden remark

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump climbed into a white garbage truck that carried his name as he tried to draw attention to a comment made by President Joe Biden a day earlier. Speaking to reporters on the tarmac in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he asked, “How do you like my garbage truck?” Trump wore an orange and yellow safety vest over his white dress shirt and red tie. He said his appearance in the truck was, quote, “in honor of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.” Trump and other Republicans have tried to change the narrative after a comedian at a weekend Trump rally disparaged Puerto Rico as a floating island of garbage.… Continue Reading

Biden suggests Trump supporters are ‘garbage’ after comic’s insult of Puerto Rico

Biden suggests Trump supporters are ‘garbage’ after comic’s insult of Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is reacting to a comic calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” at a Donald Trump rally by saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.” For some, it recalled then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton dismissing Trump supporters in 2016 by evoking a “basket of deplorables.” It was also a departure from Trump’s opponent, Kamala Harris, who has been careful not to insult his supporters and has worked to woo crossover Republicans. Biden later posted on social media that he was referring to the “hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico.”… Continue Reading

Two closing arguments show the stark choice between Trump and Harris

Two closing arguments show the stark choice between Trump and Harris

NEW YORK (AP) — In the shadow of the White House, Kamala Harris is vowing to put country over party. Inside a New York City sports arena, Trump called his Democratic opponent “a train wreck who has destroyed everything in her path.” Trump’s allies also labeled Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” and said Harris, who would be the first woman president, had begun her career as a prostitute. Two nights and 200 miles apart, the presidential candidates’ dueling closing arguments outlined in stark terms the choice U.S. voters face on Nov. 5 as they weigh two very different visions of leadership and America’s future. Voters will decide which vision they prefer in just six days.… Continue Reading

FACT FOCUS: A look at false and misleading claims surrounding the 2024 election

With early voting underway, false and misleading reports have emerged online. A woman who was shown in a video shouting at a young girl in a stroller outside the rally for Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday was falsely identified. She was not a former employee of the Harris County Democratic Party.… Continue Reading

Harris reaches for a big moment in her closing argument for ‘turning the page’ on Trump

Harris reaches for a big moment in her closing argument for ‘turning the page’ on Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris will pledge to Americans that she’ll work to improve their lives while Republican Donald Trump is in it for himself as she delivers her campaign’s closing argument Tuesday from the same site where the former president fomented the Capitol insurrection in 2021. One week out from Election Day, Harris’ address from the grassy Ellipse near the White House is designed to encourage Americans to visualize their alternate futures if she or Trump takes over the Oval Office in less than three months. Her campaign hopes to draw a massive crowd to Washington for the event.… Continue Reading

Democrats escalate attacks on Trump after comedian calls Puerto Rico ‘floating island of garbage’

Democrats escalate attacks on Trump after comedian calls Puerto Rico ‘floating island of garbage’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are stepping up their attacks on Donald Trump a day after a comedian opening a Trump rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” The comment at Madison Square Garden drew wide condemnation and highlighted the rising power of a key Latino group in the swing state of Pennsylvania. The Trump campaign distanced itself from the remarks on Puerto Rico made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe. The political fallout underscores the importance of Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes and the last-minute efforts to court growing numbers of Hispanic voters there. Trump did not directly mention the controversy during his appearances in Georgia. At a rally in Atlanta, Trump criticized Harris for calling him a fascist, declaring: “I’m not a Nazi.”… Continue Reading
