Harris calls on the United States ‘to turn the page on hatred and division’

Harris calls on the United States ‘to turn the page on hatred and division’

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kamala Harris has told a church congregation in Philadelphia that the United States is “determined to turn the page on hatred and division.” The vice president visited the Church of Christian Compassion on Sunday. The pastor introduced her at a worship service as “the voice of the future.” It’s her first stop of the day in the largest city in swing state Pennsylvania and a critical Democratic stronghold. Harris is trying to energize supporters with a little more than a week to go before the Nov. 5 election. The Democratic presidential nominee later stopped at a barbershop, and she plans to visit a Puerto Rican restaurant and a youth basketball facility before speaking at a rally.… Continue Reading

A century after Native Americans got the right to vote, they could put Trump or Harris over the top

RED SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — In the waning days of the presidential campaign, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are courting Native American voters in states where their vote could swing some of the most hotly contested counties in the country. In swing states like Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan and Nevada, the campaigns have targeted Native Americans with radio ads and events featuring speakers like former President Bill Clinton and Donald Trump Jr. Native American voters tend to favor Democrats at a higher rate, but they’re more likely to vote Republican than Latinos or African Americans. And they are one of the least partisan and youngest voting demographics in the country.… Continue Reading

Harris is leaning on big names like Obama, Beyoncé and Springsteen to close out her campaign

CLARKSTON, Ga. (AP) — Kamala Harris is enlisting some of her most high-profile surrogates in the closing days of the campaign, with Bruce Springsteen lending his star power to deliver a musical warmup for the vice president’s speech Thursday night in Georgia. Harris was headlining the event outside Atlanta with former President Barack Obama, still one of the biggest names in Democratic politics. Springsteen told the Georgia audience he was backing Harris because he wants “a president who reveres the constitution.” On Friday, Harris travels to Texas for a Houston rally with Beyoncé, according to three people familiar with the matter. Beyoncé is a Houston native and her 2016 song “Freedom” has become Harris’ campaign anthem.… Continue Reading

Trump says if he takes office, he’ll fire special counsel Jack Smith ‘within 2 seconds’

Trump says if he takes office, he’ll fire special counsel Jack Smith ‘within 2 seconds’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says that if wins the White House, he’ll fire special counsel Jack Smith “within two seconds” of taking office. Smith has charged Trump over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his mishandling of classified documents. Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday that the decision would be “so easy.” Trump, if elected, could order the Justice Department to remove Smith, But Trump probably would not be able to do it on his own because Smith isn’t a presidential appointee. When Trump, while president, was investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller, Trump urged his then-White House counsel, Don McGahn, to press the Justice Department to terminate Mueller. McGahn refused.… Continue Reading

Donald Trump tells supporters to ‘just vote’ at lively Georgia rally organized by Charlie Kirk

Donald Trump tells supporters to ‘just vote’ at lively Georgia rally organized by Charlie Kirk

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — Republican Donald Trump is pushing supporters in Georgia to get out and vote for him in a state that could be crucial in the presidential election. He spoke Wednesday before a lively rally that was filled to capacity and organized by Charlie Kirk, a conservative provocateur. Kirk is using his online presence and the organization he founded, Turning Point Action, to make himself one of the nation’s most recognizable conservatives. He is launching get-out-the-vote operations in key battleground states. Trump has put a particular emphasis on winning support from younger men as he tries to reach them through podcasts, social media and influencers such as Kirk.… Continue Reading

Efforts by Russia, Iran and China to sway US voters may escalate, new Microsoft report says

Efforts by Russia, Iran and China to sway US voters may escalate, new Microsoft report says

NEW YORK (AP) — A new threat intelligence report from Microsoft says foreign adversaries have showed continued determination to influence the U.S. election and there are signs their activity will intensify as Election Day nears. The company said Wednesday that Russian operatives are doubling down on fake videos to smear Kamala Harris’ campaign, while Chinese-linked social media campaigns are maligning down-ballot candidates who are critical of China. Microsoft says Iranian actors who allegedly sent emails aimed at intimidating U.S. voters in 2020 have been surveying election-related websites and major media outlets. Russia, China and Iran have all rejected claims that they are seeking to meddle with the U.S. election.… Continue Reading

Rapper Eminem and Obama rally voters for Kamala Harris in Detroit

Rapper Eminem and Obama rally voters for Kamala Harris in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit rapper Eminem has spoken in support of Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in his hometown before introducing former President Barack Obama at a rally. Eminem on Tuesday encouraged the crowd to “get out and vote” while saying that Harris “supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld.” The Detroit rapper’s appearance was part of a tour Obama is making in battleground states to encourage early voting. Turnout in Detroit is expected to be crucial in deciding which presidential candidate takes the key swing state of Michigan. Trump has made his own play for Detroit alongside a hometown rapper, Trick Trick, who appeared with Trump at a rally in the city last week.… Continue Reading

Trump hurls a string of insults at Harris and repeats criticism of federal response to Helene

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday hurled a series of personal attacks at Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her “lazy” — a word long used to demean Black people in racist terms — and repeatedly questioning her intelligence and stamina. At an event in Miami, he said Harris was “lazy as hell” for not holding a campaign event. Harris spent her day in meetings in Washington and recording interviews with Telemundo and NBC. Later in the day during a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, Trump called Harris a “stupid person” and went on to ask: “Does she drink? Is she on drugs?”… Continue Reading

More Republicans are voting early than in recent years, helping break records before Election Day

More Republicans are voting early than in recent years, helping break records before Election Day

With Donald Trump’s encouragement, Republicans are joining Democrats at the polls to cast their ballots early. The surge of GOP voters has helped break records for early voting in swing states like Georgia and Nevada. Republicans hope it gives them an edge on Election Day. Typically campaigns try to get their voters to cast ballots early, either in person of by mail, so they can focus on turning out marginal voters on Election Day. But when Trump condemned early voting in 2020 and 2022, his party stopped doing it. However, it’s unclear what this means for the election because it only factors in the voter’s registration, not their actual vote.… Continue Reading

Trump repeats debunked claims about FEMA as he surveys storm damage in North Carolina

Trump repeats debunked claims about FEMA as he surveys storm damage in North Carolina

RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is blasting federal emergency responders whose work in North Carolina has been stymied by armed harassment and a deluge of misinformation. But Trump said Monday that he was not concerned that the aftermath of Hurricane Helene would affect election results in the battleground state. Trump was asked whether it was helpful to criticize hurricane relief workers after the Federal Emergency Management Agency recently paused its work in the area because of reports they could be targeted by militia. He responded by again attacking the agency and repeating the falsehood that the response was hampered because FEMA spent its budget helping people who crossed the border illegally.… Continue Reading
