Stock market today: Wall Street hits records despite tariff talk

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records after Donald Trump’s latest talk about tariffs created only some ripples on Wall Street. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% to reach another all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.3% to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.6% as Big Tech stocks helped lead the way. Stock markets abroad saw mostly modest losses after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office. Trump calls for 100% tariffs on cars made in Mexico as part of US manufacturing plan

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Donald Trump has pledged to stop U.S. businesses from shipping jobs overseas and to take other countries’ jobs and factories by relying heavily on sweeping tariffs. That’s despite economists’ persistent warnings that doing so could also dramatically raise prices for domestic consumers. The former president laid out a broad array of economic proposals during a speech in the key swing state of Georgia on Tuesday, promising to create a special ambassador to help lure foreign manufacturers to the U.S. and further entice them by offering access to federal land.
