Rapper Eminem and Obama rally voters for Kamala Harris in Detroit

Rapper Eminem and Obama rally voters for Kamala Harris in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit rapper Eminem has spoken in support of Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in his hometown before introducing former President Barack Obama at a rally. Eminem on Tuesday encouraged the crowd to “get out and vote” while saying that Harris “supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld.” The Detroit rapper’s appearance was part of a tour Obama is making in battleground states to encourage early voting. Turnout in Detroit is expected to be crucial in deciding which presidential candidate takes the key swing state of Michigan. Trump has made his own play for Detroit alongside a hometown rapper, Trick Trick, who appeared with Trump at a rally in the city last week.… Continue Reading

Walz and Vance go in depth on policy while attacking each other’s running mates in VP debate

NEW YORK (AP) — In a debate that evoked a calmer era in American politics, Tim Walz and JD Vance on Tuesday went after each other’s running mates and sought to shore up their campaigns’ vulnerabilities at a time of renewed fears of a regional war in the Middle East and sadness over devastation from Hurricane Helene. Both Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota, and Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, focused many of their criticisms on the top of the ticket, as is traditional for VP debates. They each pointed to the crises of the day as reasons for voters to choose Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump.… Continue Reading

Vance and Walz keep it civil in a policy-heavy discussion: VP debate takeaways

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice presidential nominees JD Vance and Tim Walz have used their time on the debate stage to focus the bulk of their attacks not on one another, but on those at the top of their rival tickets. Republican Vance and Democrat Walz both sought to project themselves as genial opponents as they lobbed criticism at Harris and Trump, respectively. With the Mideast in turmoil, the two vice presidential candidates offered different approaches toward foreign policy: Walz promised “steady leadership” under Harris while Vance pledged a return to “peace through strength” if Trump is returned to the White House. The two running mates agreed that the number of migrants in the U.S. illegally is a problem. But each laid the blame on the opposing presidential nominee.… Continue Reading

What to watch as JD Vance and Tim Walz meet for a vice presidential debate

What to watch as JD Vance and Tim Walz meet for a vice presidential debate

ATLANTA (AP) — The vice presidential debate between Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz will bring together undercards who have spent two months going after each other and the top of each ticket. Tuesday’s matchup might not carry the same stakes as the Sept. 10 debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. But it offers their top lieutenants a fresh opportunity to introduce themselves, vouch for their bosses and fulfill a time-honored role of a running mate in acting as an attack dog. It will be the biggest television and online audience either No. 2 will see before Election Day.… Continue Reading

CBS News says it will be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other in veep debate

CBS News says it will be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other in veep debate

NEW YORK (AP) — When JD Vance and Tim Walz take the stage for next week’s vice presidential debate, CBS News says it will be up to the candidates, not the moderators, to fact-check each other. That was a sticking point during the two general election presidential debates heard this year. Last spring, CNN moderators did not correct any points made by Donald Trump and Joe Biden during the debate that eventually led to Biden’s withdrawal from the race. But earlier this month during the only meeting so far between Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, ABC News interjected real-time fact checks of statements made by the former president, infuriating him and his supporters.… Continue Reading

What polls show about Tim Walz and JD Vance before Tuesday’s VP debate

What polls show about Tim Walz and JD Vance before Tuesday’s VP debate

WASHINGTON (AP) — This year’s vice presidential candidates both entered the spotlight this summer as relative political unknowns — but as they prepare to address their biggest audience yet in next week’s debate, Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance is less popular among voters than his Democratic rival, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The findings of the new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reinforce a challenge for the Republican presidential ticket as voting begins in more and more states. In addition to Vance’s relative unpopularity among voters overall, Democrats are more enthusiastic about Kamala Harris and Walz than Republicans are about Donald Trump and Vance.… Continue Reading
