Hearing on Trump assassination attempts says Pennsylvania failure was by Secret Service

WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of a bipartisan House task force investigating the Trump assassination attempts emphasized during their first hearing that the Secret Service, not local authorities, was responsible for failures in planning and communications that led to a gunman being able to open fire on former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. Lawmakers repeatedly questioned why the agency tasked with protecting the country’s top leaders didn’t do a better job communicating with local authorities during the July 13 rally, particularly when it came to securing the building that Thomas Michael Crooks was able to climb up and open fire on Trump.… Continue Reading

Hello, I’m Johnny Cash’s statue: A monument to the singer is unveiled at the US Capitol

WASHINGTON (AP) — Johnny Cash can now be seen in the unlikeliest of venues. A statue of the famed singer has been unveiled at the U.S. Capitol. Congressional leaders, Arkansas lawmakers and members of the Cash family were on hand Tuesday for the unveiling of a bronze statue in the likeness of the “Man in Black.” The Cash statue is the second figure Arkansas has sent to replace two existing ones representing the state at the U.S. Capitol. Another statue depicting civil rights leader Daisy Bates was unveiled at the Capitol earlier this year.… Continue Reading

Spending deal averts a possible federal shutdown and funds the government into December

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional leaders have a deal on a short-term spending bill that will fund federal agencies for about three months. The agreement announced Sunday averts a possible partial government shutdown when the new budget year begins Oct. 1 and pushes final decisions until after the November election. Bipartisan negotiations began in earnest shortly after a failed vote last week in the House. ouse Speaker Mike Johnson dropped his plan to link temporary funding with a mandate that would have compelled states to require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.… Continue Reading

House rejects temporary funding bill to avoid government shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has rejected Speaker Mike Johnson’s bill to temporarily fund the government. The legislation that failed Wednesday would have linked temporary government funding with a mandate that states require proof of citizenship when people register to vote. Democrats overwhelmingly opposed the measure. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump weighed in again just hours before the vote, seemingly encouraging House Republicans to let a partial government shutdown begin at the end of the month unless they get the proof of citizenship mandate. Lawmakers need to approve a stopgap measure to prevent a partial shutdown when the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.… Continue Reading
