BC celebrates 40th anniversary of Doug Flutie’s Miracle in Miami pass with 41-21 win over UNC

BOSTON (AP) — Quarterback Grayson James threw for a touchdown and ran for another Saturday, and Boston College celebrated the 40th anniversary of Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary pass with a 41-21 victory over North Carolina. Ryan Turner added a 78-yard interception return for BC, which became bowl eligible under first-year coach Bill O’Brien. It’s the second straight and eighth in the last nine years the Eagles have a bowl opportunity. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field before the second quarter. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Omarion Hampton posted career highs of 35 carries for 244 yards with a key late touchdown that helped North Carolina beat Wake Forest 31-24. The win pushed the Tar Heels to bowl eligibility. Hampton found the end zone from 6 yards out with 2:26 left for a 31-17 lead. Demond Claiborne ran for two touchdowns for the Demon Deacons, who lost three turnovers. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Omarion Hampton ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and J.J. Jones caught five passes for 129 yards and a pair of scores as North Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak with a 41-14 win over Virginia. The Tar Heel buried a month’s worth of frustration by dominating the second and third quarters to end their longest losing streak since 2018. Virginia endured a dismal offensive day, not scoring a touchdown until backup quarterback Tony Muskett connected with JR Wilson for a 68-yard score with 10:07 left and the outcome no longer in doubt. The Tar Heels outgained Virginia 428 yards to 288 and held the Cavaliers to a 6-for-16 showing on third down. North Carolina football player Tylee Craft dies from rare lung cancer at 23

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina football player Tylee Craft has died from a rare form of lung cancer. Coach Mack Brown made the announcement in his postgame news conference following the Tar Heels’ loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Craft was 23. Brown said he didn’t learn of Craft’s death until after the game. The team had honored Craft during Saturday’s game by wearing shirts bearing Craft’s name and number. UNC had honored Craft’s family on the field. Receiver J.J. Jones also wore Craft’s jersey during the game. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Jamal Haynes ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead 68-yard score in the final minute, as Georgia Tech defeated North Carolina 41-34. Haynes’ second score came with 16 seconds left, just two plays after North Carolina had tied it on a Noah Burnette 26-yard field goal. The Yellow Jackets mustered 505 total yards, including 371 rushing. In addition to Haynes, quarterback Haynes King also had a big day with a season-high 107 yards and two scores on the ground. North Carolina pulled within 34-31 with 3:27 left on a 1-yard run by Jacolby Criswell, his second touchdown of the day and Burnette’s field goal tied it with 44 seconds remaining. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Eli Holstein threw three touchdowns and rushed for another as Pittsburgh beat North Carolina 34-24 Saturday. Holstein completed 25-of-42 passes for a career-best 381 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a team-high 76 yards and a score to lead the Panthers (5-0, 1-0 ACC). It’s the third consecutive loss for UNC (3-3, 0-2 ACC) Omarion Hampton paced the offense with 106 rushing yards and a score. (AP) — Peyton Jones ran 20 yards for a touchdown as Duke took its first lead with 5:42 remaining, Star Thomas scored two touchdowns and the Blue Devils rallied from a 20-point deficit to defeat rival North Carolina 21-20 in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. Thomas rushed for 166 yards and Maalik Murphy threw for a touchdown and 209 yards. (AP) — North Carolina’s Mack Brown says he is “disappointed in me” for making emotional postgame locker-room comments after giving up 70 points in a shocking home loss to James Madison. That included Brown floating whether he should stay on as coach. The Tar Heels lost 70-50 at home Saturday to the Dukes from the Sun Belt Conference. The 70 points tied the record for the most points ever allowed by UNC in any game. Brown said he asked players if they felt good in his leadership afterward. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Alonza Barnett III’s five touchdown passes led a quick-strike offense that helped James Madison beat North Carolina 70-50 on Saturday for a signature road win under first-year coach Bob Chesney. Barnett threw for 388 yards with no interceptions while also running for 99 yards and two scores for the Dukes. James Madison had TDs on offense, defense and special teams in its first victory over North Carolina in four meetings.
