RJ Davis and Seth Trimble rescue North Carolina in 102-96 OT win over Boston College

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — RJ Davis scored seven points in overtime and Seth Trimble hit the go-ahead jumper, lifting North Carolina to a 102-96 victory over Boston College. Davis hit a 3-pointer for a 94-91 lead near the three-minute mark of the extra period and after Boston College tied it with a 3, Davis made two free throws for a two-point lead near the two-minute mark. After BC tied it again, Trimble’s jumper put the Tar Heels up 98-96 with 1:42 remaining. The Eagles did not score the rest of the way, Davis hit two free throws with 53 seconds left and Ven-Allen Lubin’s dunk with 28 seconds left punctuated the victory. Jaylen Blakes hits short jumper with 1.5 seconds left, Stanford tops North Carolina 72-71

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Duke graduate transfer Jaylen Blakes hit a short jumper with 1.5 seconds left to lift Stanford to a 72-71 win over North Carolina on Saturday, the first meeting as Atlantic Coast Conference rivals and the first Cardinal win over the Tar Heels in 15 meetings. Blakes took the inbounds pass in the backcourt after Seth Trimble hit two free throws for North Carolina with 7.7 seconds to play and worked his way up the left side. He bumped a defender on the left side of the lane, stepped back and swished the winner. The game had 12 ties and 14 lead changes with the biggest lead seven points. Maxime Raynaud had 24 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks for the Cardinal and Blakes had 20 points with seven assists. RJ Davis scored 19 to lead the Tar Heels.… Continue Reading

Ian Jackson scores career-high 26, UNC beats Campbell 97-81

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Ian Jackson scored a season-high 26 points, RJ Davis added 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and North Carolina beat Campbell 97-81 in the Tar Heels’ final nonconference game of the season. Elliot Cadeau added 12 points and a career-high 12 assists, Drake Powell also scored 12 points and Jalen Washington added 10 for North Carolina (8-5). Cadeau made a jumper to spark a 15-3 run, Davis followed with a 3-pointer that gave UNC the lead for good with 16:09 left in the first half and Cadeau capped the spurt with a layup that made it 22-12 with 12:41 to go until halftime. Kitchens will lead Tar Heels in Fenway Bowl against UConn. Another ex-Browns coach is standing by

BOSTON (AP) — Bill Belichick hasn’t taken over yet on the North Carolina sideline but he still looms over the program as the Tar Heels prepare to play UConn in the Fenway Bowl. A lot of the attention for Saturday’s game at Fenway Park is focused on the former New England Patriots coach returning to his old backyard for the first game since he was hired in Chapel Hill. It’s his first college coaching job ever after six Super Bowls and more NFL wins than anyone except for Don Shula. RJ Davis rallies North Carolina past No. 18 UCLA 76-74 in CBS Sports Classic

NEW YORK (AP) — RJ Davis made the tying and go-ahead free throws with 13 seconds left, and North Carolina erased a 16-point deficit for a 76-74 victory over No. 18 UCLA on Saturday in the CBS Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden. Davis scored 17 points and gave the Tar Heels (7-5) their first lead since the opening minutes. Ian Jackson scored a career-high 24 points. Seth Trimble added 12 and forced a UCLA turnover that set up the free throws by Davis as North Carolina outscored UCLA 33-15 over the final 12-plus minutes and shot 46.8%. Elliot Cadeau, UNC ponder emotional loss to No. 7 Florida after comeback falls short

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina guard Elliot Cadeau couldn’t hold back the tears as he walked off the floor at the Spectrum Center following the Tar Heels’ 90-84 loss to No. 7 Florida. The Tar Heels again suffered through a lackluster first half against a big-time opponent, only to awaken in the second half and turn a 17-point deficit into the 4-point lead. But the Tar Heels faltered down the stretch, the victim of poor rebounding and untimely mistakes. One of those belonged to Cadeau, who dribbled the ball off his leg and out of bounds along the baseline with 1:26 left in the game with the score tied at 84. Will Richard scores 22 points, No. 7 Florida holds off UNC rally to remain unbeaten with 90-84 win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Will Richard scored 22 points, Alijah Martin added 19 points and No. 7 Florida held off a furious second half rally by North Carolina to remain unbeaten with a 90-84 victory in the Jumpman Invitational. R.J. Davis had 29 points and eight rebounds for the Tar Heels, who battled back from a 17-point first half deficit to take a 4-point the lead midway through the second half. North Carolina’s brutal schedule continues with games against No. 7 Florida, No. 18 UCLA up next

North Carolina continues one of the most daunting schedules in Division I basketball this week. The Tar Heels face No. 7 Florida in Charlotte in the Jumpman Invitational on Tuesday night, then head to Madison Square Garden on Saturday to face No. 18 UCLA, which is riding an eight-game winning streak. Cade Tyson scores 23 points and North Carolina routs La Salle 93-67

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Backup guard Cade Tyson scored a season-high 23 points and made five 3-pointers in the Tar Heels’ 93-67 victory over La Salle. Tyson shot 9-for-14 overall, including 5 for 10 on 3-pointers. He was averaging 2.7 points through UNC’s first nine games. RJ Davis scored 13 points, Seth Trimble had 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Ven-Allen Lubin had 10 points for North Carolina. The Tar Heels shot 58% in the second half and 54% overall despite unimpressive 3-point shooting — 10 for 31 — and poor free-throw shooting — 11 for 23. Smothers’ late TD helps NC State edge rival North Carolina 35-30 in Brown’s farewell at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Hollywood Smothers slipped through the middle of the line for a 2-yard touchdown with 25 seconds left to help N.C. State beat rival North Carolina 35-30 on Saturday night in the Tar Heels’ final game under Mack Brown. Smothers’ short TD run capped the go-ahead 75-yard drive that pushed the Wolfpack to bowl eligibility. That capped a wild finish that saw the Tar Heels take a 30-29 lead on Omarion Hampton’s 47-yard catch and run to the end zone with 1:51 left.
