North Carolina beats Wake Forest 68-59 to advance to ACC semifinals behind RJ Davis’ 23 points

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — RJ Davis had 23 points and five 3-pointers, Ven-Allen Lubin added 10 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 5 seed North Carolina beat fourth-seeded Wake Forest 68-59 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals for coach Hubert Davis’ 100th victory with the program. North Carolina (22-12), which has won eight of its last nine games, advances to play No. 1 seed Duke in the semifinals on Friday. Duke coach Jon Scheyer said it’s a “real longshot” that freshman star Cooper Flagg will be able to play because of an ankle sprain. Wake Forest (21-11) was looking to advance to its first ACC Tournament semifinals since 2006. Hunter Sallis led Wake Forest with 25 points. Hildreth scores 20 to help Wake Forest beat UNC 67-66, win 6th in a row

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Hildreth scored 20 points, Hunter Sallis added 14 and nine rebounds and Wake Forest beat North Carolina 67-66. Tre’Von Spillers and Efton Reid II each scored 10 second-half points and finished with 12. Spillers added nine rebounds, four offensive, and four blocks. RJ Davis scored 21 points and Elliot Cadeau added 14 with a career-high 13 assists for North Carolina (12-8, 5-3 ACC). Spillers made back-to-back baskets to spark a 12-2 run, capped by his three-point play that made it 65-56 with 1:17 to play. Wake Forest (15-4, 7-1) has won six games in a row. Hampton’s huge day helps North Carolina hold off Wake Forest 31-24 to reach bowl eligibility

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Omarion Hampton posted career highs of 35 carries for 244 yards with a key late touchdown that helped North Carolina beat Wake Forest 31-24. The win pushed the Tar Heels to bowl eligibility. Hampton found the end zone from 6 yards out with 2:26 left for a 31-17 lead. Demond Claiborne ran for two touchdowns for the Demon Deacons, who lost three turnovers. Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin says Wake Forest violated “an unwritten rule” by buying its way out of next year’s matchup, leaving the Rebels in search of another major-conference opponent. The fifth-ranked Rebels beat the Demon Deacons 40-6 on Saturday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as part of a scheduled home-and-home series. There won’t be a rematch next season in Oxford, Mississippi.
