DURHAM, N.C. (WPTF) – A longtime Durham government leader is being recognized. The Durham Board of County Commissioners held a ceremony Friday (March 20) officially renaming the Administration II Building for former longtime Durham Mayor and County Commissioner Bill Bell.
Bell served as a Durham County Commissioner beginning in 1972. He served as Chair of the County Commissioners from 1982 to 1994, and again from 1996 to 2000. He was elected Durham’s Mayor from 2001 until 2017. To date, he is the longest-serving Mayor of Durham.
“Renaming the Administration II building in Mayor Bell’s honor is a meaningful recognition of that legacy,” noted Claudia Hager, Durham County Manager in a press release. “It reflects his years of leadership and the values he embodied: integrity, collaboration, and a steadfast belief in Durham’s innate greatness. The William V. Bell Building will stand as a daily reminder of what dedicated, principled leadership can accomplish.”
