CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WPTF) – One Triangle police department is remembering the loss of a police dog.
In a press release, The Chapel Hill Police Department said K9 Mando died following a sudden illness while off duty last week.
“Mando truly was the perfect working dog,” said Mando’s partner of six years, Lt. Jason Belcher.
“He had the drive to complete any task asked of him during deployments and the gentle demeanor of a giant teddy bear. He was a true reflection of the Guardians of the Hill and the community he served.”
He was well known and loved by many in Chapel Hill who met him through countless community visits — from schools and events to the Department’s Community Police Academy.
“In the last week, I’ve heard from so many people who are remembering Mando and have been kind enough to share their own memories with me,” Lt. Belcher said. “I’m also grateful for the support of my family and colleagues, who are grieving with me.”
Mando was Lt. Belcher’s third working dog. Together they led the Department’s K9 Unit, which included training other K9s on the team.
After 17 years serving in the unit, Lt. Belcher will soon transition to lead the Community Services Unit, which coordinates the Department’s community outreach, a role he already knows well.
“Mando taught me so much about what it means to connect with and serve our community,” Lt. Belcher said. “I’m incredibly proud to carry his legacy with me.”
