ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (NCN News) –As the mid-term political cycle heats up and people are watching developments in the Mideast, Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak Friday (March 13) at Rocky Mount Mills.
The visit to the Power House event space comes as the Rocky Mount area is prime territory in the race for the First Congressional District.
Democrat Don Davis the incumbent, now represents a redrawn district which favors Republicans. North Carolina was among the state to redraw districts between ten-year census, something that President Trump had promoted in multiple states, such as Texas. In response other states, such as California are also doing redrawing to favor Democrats.
Laurie Buckout won the Republican primary for the seat and has already received an endorsement from President Trump. The retired Army colonel was also the GOP’s choice two years ago and lost by less than two percent, losing to Davis before the district was redrawn.
The visit also comes as more troops from North Carolina, which houses major military bases, could become involved in the Iran conflict.
Vance, who grew up in Middletown, Ohio, came to prominence when he wrote his own life story in “Hillbilly Elegy.” The memoir covers his Appalachian roots, and his journey to graduating from Yale Law School while also dealing with family issues, including addiction. He was endorsed by President Trump for the U.S. Senate seat before he was added to the Republican ticket in 2024.
He is among those on the current short list among political observers as a Republican presidential candidate in 2028.
Doors open at 11 a.m. at the Power House and Vance is set to speak around 2 p.m.
