RALEIGH, N.C. (WPTF) – Raleigh police has made a felony arrest in connection with an early morning pedestrian death Monday (May 4).
Just before 3:30 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian at the top of the South Wilmington Street bridge that crosses over South Saunders Street.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrian was walking on the right shoulder of South Wilmington Street when he was struck by a vehicle. After being struck, the pedestrian fell from the bridge onto South Saunders Street. He was subsequently struck by several other unidentified vehicles after landing from the initial collision. The pedestrian died. He has been identified as 59-year-old Robert Jackson Henderson.
The suspect vehicle, a blue Honda CR-V, had struck the wall, receiving heavy front-end damage, and was abandoned on top of the bridge in the roadway. The suspect driver fled the scene and was later caught.
He’s identified as 22-year-old Chandler Evan Brown and faces these charges
- Felony Hit/Run Death
- Felony Death by Vehicle
- DWI
- Failure to maintain lane control
- Failure to reduce speed
Both South Saunders Street and South Wilmington Street were closed for several hours throughout the morning. The crash remains an ongoing investigation.
