RALEIGH, N.C. (WPTF) – We now have more details on a fatal late night crash Saturday (May 9) on South New Hope Road in Raleigh near Rogers Lane.
According to Raleigh police, the preliminary investigation indicates that a silver Toyota RAV4 was speeding northbound on South New Hope Road shortly after 11 p.m. while passing the Rogers Lane intersection
The vehicle traveled into the median and struck a small tree. The impact caused the vehicle to slide sideways on the driver’s side into a larger tree farther down the median. The Toyota RAV4 then struck the larger tree with the roof of the vehicle before overturning and coming to rest in the opposite travel lanes of South New Hope Road.
As a result of the crash, two passengers died from their injuries.
The driver, Jonathan De Loera Olmos, 19, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. He has been charged with Driving While Impaired and Felony Death by Motor Vehicle.
Investigators said alcohol and speed likely contributed to the crash. The investigation continues.
