PITTSBORO, N.C. (WPTF) — The body of the teenage swimmer who went missing Saturday evening at Jordan Lake has been recovered, concluding the search effort.
According to the Chatham Counties sheriff’s office, approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, the teen encountered trouble in the water while swimming from a family boat on Jordan Lake. An extensive search began shortly afterward and continued through Saturday evening before resuming Sunday morning.
Search operations continued Sunday until severe weather, including thunderstorms and heavy rain, moved into the area, making it unsafe to continue coordinated search efforts. As personnel were wrapping up operations for the day, a North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission officer located the missing swimmer.
Out of respect for the family and because the victim is a juvenile, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is not identifying the victim publicly,
“Our hearts are with this young person’s family, friends and loved ones during this very difficult time,” said Chatham County North Carolina State Parks. Sheriff Mike Roberson. “We are grateful to the many agencies and personnel who dedicated their time, expertise and resources throughout this search.”
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the agencies and personnel who assisted throughout the operation, including North Chatham Fire Department, Alamance County Rescue, FirstHealth EMS, Chatham County Emergency Management, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and North Carolina State Parks.
