RALEIGH N.C. (WPTF) — A major roadway improvement is now open to traffic in North Raleigh nearly one year ahead of schedule.
U.S. 401 improvements at the intersections of Perry Creek Road, Mitchell Mill Road and Ligon Mill Road began in summer 2023 and are now complete.
“As someone who has called Raleigh home since 1991 and grew up along this corridor, this project means a lot to me. I love seeing a safer connection at all three of these intersections, while also making everyday travel easier for our community,” said Lee Mai, Project Manager in a press release.
The project added a new Reduced Conflict Intersection at Perry Creek Road, helping improve traffic flow and safety along U.S. 401. This innovative intersection can reduce crashes by up to 50%.
The Mitchell Mill Road intersection has a new continuous flow design, making it the second continuous flow intersection in the state. This design can double the amount of traffic moving through an intersection without having to construct an interchange.
The Ligon Mill intersection was relocated north of Mitchell Mill on U.S. 401 to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
Nearly 60,000 vehicles travel this corridor each day, and that number is expected to top 93,000 by 2040. These improvements will help U.S. 401 keep pace with growth and keep people moving.
