RALEIGH. N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Democratic Party has challenged the state election board’s decision last week to recognize a new political party that will put Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the state’s presidential ballots. The complaint filed Thursday in state court seeks to reverse the board’s action that made “We The People” an official party. The board also voted last week to reject the petition drive seeking recognition for the Justice for All Party, which would have put Cornel West on the ballot. KENLY, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a truck driver is facing manslaughter charges after five people died in a crash that shut down northbound Interstate 95 for nine hours. Officials say the crash happened Wednesday in Wilson County when a Freightliner tractor-trailer failed to reduce speed as traffic slowed and hit a Chevy Tahoe, a Toyota RAV-4 and two other tractor-trailers before catching fire. The highway patrol says five people in the two SUVs died and the tractor-trailer drivers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Omarion Hampton is eager to prove he can be a more versatile, well-rounded running back entering his third season at North Carolina. A second-team All-American last year, Hampton was fifth in the nation in rushing with 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Tar Heels, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. But he was limited to 29 receptions for 222 yards and one touchdown through the air.
