Harris campaign releases new ad to highlight plans to build 3 million homes and reduce inflation

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has a new advertising push to draw attention to her plan to build 3 million new homes over four years. The Tuesday move is designed to contain inflationary pressures that also draws a sharp contrast to Republican Donald Trump’s approach. Harris highlights her plan in a new minute-long ad that uses her personal experience. The Democratic presidential nominee grew up in rental housing while her mother had saved for a decade before she could buy a home. … Continue Reading

Iran’s supreme leader opens door to negotiations with United States over Tehran’s nuclear program

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s supreme leader has opened the door to renewed negotiations with the United States over his country’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told its civilian government on Tuesday that there was “no barrier” to engaging with its “enemy.” Khamenei’s remarks set clear red lines for any talks taking place under the government of reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian. Khamenei renewed his warnings that Washington wasn’t to be trusted. But his comments mirror those around the time of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.… Continue Reading

Dow closes at a record even as losses for Big Tech pull S&P 500 and Nasdaq lower

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high on Wall Street, even as losses for Big Tech companies pulled the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite lower. The Dow edged up 0.2% Monday, enough to beat the all-time high it set last month. The S&P 500 lost 0.3%. and the Nasdaq composite pulled back 0.9%. The mixed trading came at the start of a week featuring another full slate of corporate earnings and the government’s latest inflation reading. … Continue Reading

Trump would veto legislation establishing a federal abortion ban, Vance says

Trump would veto legislation establishing a federal abortion ban, Vance says

NEW YORK (AP) — Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance says Donald Trump wouldn’t support a national abortion ban if elected president and would veto such legislation if it landed on his desk. Vance’s comments in an NBC interview come after Democrats spent much of their national convention in Chicago last week assailing Trump for his role in appointing the Supreme Court Justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. But efforts to try to neutralize an issue that Democrats hope will galvanize voters also risk alienating parts of Trump’s core supporters who are base opposed to abortion rights.… Continue Reading

NASA decides to keep 2 astronauts in space until February, nixes return on troubled Boeing capsule

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA has decided it’s too risky to bring two astronauts back to Earth in Boeing’s troubled new capsule. They’ll have to wait until February for a ride home with SpaceX. What should have been a weeklong test flight for the pair will now last more than eight months. Their trip to the International Space Station in June was marred by a cascade of thruster failures and helium leaks.… Continue Reading

Hezbollah says it launches attack on Israel with large number of drones

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah says it has launched an attack on Israel with a large number of drones in retaliation for the killing of one of its commanders in Beirut. Hezbollah says the attack early Sunday is targeting “a qualitative Israeli military target that will be announced later” as well as “targeting a number of enemy sites and barracks and Iron Dome platforms.” It says the strikes are an initial response to the killing of Fouad Shukur, a top commander with the group, in a strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs last month.… Continue Reading

North Carolina court says speedway can sue top health official over COVID-19 closure

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s highest court says a racetrack shuttered for defying state gathering limits during the pandemic can sue the state’s top health regulator. Ace Speedway in Alamance County and its owners accuse Gov. Roy Cooper’s administration of violating its constitutional rights. The state Supreme Court agreed unanimously Friday that the speedway can seek financial damages. A speedway operator alleges he was targeted by Cooper for closure because he had spoken out against the administration’s crowd restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.… Continue Reading

At least 5 Secret Service agents have been placed on modified duty after Trump assassination attempt

At least five Secret Service agents have been placed on modified duty after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July.
