Crowds of pro-Palestinian protesters rally and march outside Democratic convention’s 3rd night

Crowds of pro-Palestinian protesters rally and march outside Democratic convention’s 3rd night

CHICAGO (AP) — More than 2,000 pro-Palestinian protesters rallied just a half mile from a neighboring park where pro-Israel demonstrators gathered. The demonstration comes after 56 protesters were arrested Tuesday night following an intense stand-off with Chicago police at a protest not affiliated with a coalition of more than 200 groups that organized permitted rallies .As marchers passed under a new elevated train station near the United Center that was completed just before the DNC, officers were seen bringing a person to the ground on the platform above. In response, hundreds of protesters pushed against the edge of the station, banging on the glass with their hands and flag poles as they called on police to free the person.… Continue Reading

Trump speaks from behind bulletproof glass at first outdoor rally since his attempted assassination

ASHEBORO, N.C. (AP) — At his first outdoor rally since last month’s attempted assassination, Donald Trump spoke from behind bulletproof glass Wednesday in North Carolina at an event focused on national security. On politics, he called his predecessor Barack Obama “nasty” for his comments the night before at the Democratic National Convention. Trump blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the deadly Afghanistan withdrawal and for wars in Ukraine and the Middle East while returning repeatedly in his remarks to the Democratic gathering in Chicago, where speaker after speaker has assailed Trump as a threat to the country should he return to the White House.… Continue Reading

Robinson unveils public safety plan in race for North Carolina governor

STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Republican gubernatorial nominee Mark Robinson has a public safety plan billed as focusing on building up police, fighting violence and drugs and keeping criminals behind bars. The sitting lieutenant governor unveiled the proposal on Wednesday in Statesville. The plan in part attempts to fight what Robinson labels left-leaning efforts to scale back police funding and reduce cash bail. … Continue Reading

PHOENIX (AP) — Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy’s running mate openly discussed the possibility on a podcast this week. … Continue Reading

Wall Street pulls closer to records after retailers top profit forecasts

Wall Street pulls closer to records after retailers top profit forecasts

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks closed higher after more big companies delivered profit reports that topped analysts’ expectations. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.6%. Target jumped after topping profit expectations for the spring. But Macy’s dropped after it cut its forecast for sales this year due in part to more discriminating shoppers. Treasury yields eased a bit as investors wait for the week’s main event, which will arrive Friday. That’s when Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will give a speech about interest rates.… Continue Reading

At least 55 arrested after clashes with police outside Israeli Consulate in Chicago during DNC

CHICAGO (AP) — At least 55 protesters were arrested following violent clashes with police in downtown Chicago on the second night of the Democratic National Convention. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling called the clashes outside the Israeli Consulate Tuesday evening “a danger to our city.” Snelling said Wednesday that the protesters “showed up with the intention of committing acts of violence, vandalism.” The arrests took place as Democrats met about 2 miles away at the United Center for a second night of speeches.… Continue Reading

Harris packs the Wisconsin arena that hosted the RNC while the Obamas address the DNC in Chicago

Harris packs the Wisconsin arena that hosted the RNC while the Obamas address the DNC in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Kamala Harris has rallied thousands of voters in one packed arena as former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama energized millions more on Harris’ behalf inside another. Ahead of Obama’s address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Harris declared in battleground Wisconsin that she was running “a people-powered campaign.” Back at the convention, Barack Obama said, “I am feeling hope.” Michelle Obama said, “Something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn’t it?” She harkened back to a recent comment Trump made about preserving so-called “Black jobs,” asking, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s seeking might be one of those ‘Black jobs’?”… Continue Reading

Trump campaigns to ‘make America safe again’ as Democratic convention zeroes in on his felony record

Trump campaigns to ‘make America safe again’ as Democratic convention zeroes in on his felony record

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump has pledged to “make America safe again ” while campaigning in Michigan as the Democrats who gathered in Chicago to nominate Kamala Harris branded him a career criminal. Trump campaigned Tuesday in Michigan as part of a battleground campaign swing designed to counter the Democratic National Convention. He stood alongside sheriff’s deputies in the city of Howell and tarred Harris, a former San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, as the “ringleader” of a “Marxist attack on law enforcement” across the country. The event was billed as another way for Trump to draw contrasts with Harris. But, as with earlier events on the economy and inflation, Trump devoted much of his attention to attacking the vice president.… Continue Reading

Democrats turn their roll call into a dance party with celebrities, state-specific songs and Lil Jon

Democrats turn their roll call into a dance party with celebrities, state-specific songs and Lil Jon

CHICAGO (AP) — Convention roll call votes can be staid and cheesy, but Democrats turned theirs into the ultimate dance party on Tuesday. DJ Cassidy stood onstage in what appeared to be a double-breasted satin suit of royal blue, spinning a special song for each state and territory awarding their delegates to Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention. What America got was a mashup of an elite karaoke night: Detroit native Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for Michigan and “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” from the Dropkick Murphys for Massachusetts. Georgia brought one of its natives in person: Atlanta’s Lil Jon striding through Chicago’s United Center to the beats of “Turn Down for What,” his song with DJ Snake.… Continue Reading

State elections board OKs university ID on phones for voter access this fall

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina elections board has approved the first mobile identification that can be used to meet state voter ID requirements. The Democratic-controlled State Board of Elections voted along party lines on Tuesday to sign off on mobile credentials offered to students and employees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Showing that ID from one’s phone is now a way that registered voters can meet the state’s relatively new photo voter ID mandate. Republican board members opposed the approval, saying state law requires actual physical cards. The ID mandate contained in the 2018 photo voter ID law didn’t begin until 2023.… Continue Reading
