New transfer guides aim to help community college students pursue four-year degrees

RALEIGH, N.C. (WPTF) – State higher education leaders have unveiled new transfer guides designed to make it easier than ever to transition to one of the state’s 16 public universities. The guides, which include information on admissions, course equivalencies, and academic programs, help students align their community college credits with the requirements for four-year degrees in specific majors at universities within the University of North Carolina (UNC) System.… Continue Reading

Blinken ends latest Mideast visit without a cease-fire, warning ‘time is of the essence’

JERUSALEM (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has ended his latest visit to the Middle East without securing a cease-fire in Gaza. He warned on Tuesday that “time is of the essence” even as Hamas and Israel signaled that challenges remain. After meetings with officials in fellow mediating countries Egypt and Qatar, Blinken said that because Israel has accepted a proposal to bridge gaps with the militant group, the focus turns to doing everything possible to “get Hamas on board.” Mediators also must ensure both sides agree to key details to put a deal in place. Blinken says the so-called bridging proposal is “very clear on the schedule and the locations of (Israeli military) withdrawals from Gaza.”… Continue Reading

Fort Liberty soldier indicted for lying about association with group advocating government overthrow

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A U.S. soldier in North Carolina has been indicted on charges of having lied to authorities about his association with a group that advocated overthrowing the federal government and of trafficking firearms. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for eastern North Carolina said that 20-year-old Kai Liam Nix was indicted last week and made his first court appearance Monday. He’s being held pending a detention hearing. Nix is on active duty at Fort Liberty. The indictment alleges Nix falsely stated in 2022 on his security clearance application that he had never been a member of such a group. The indictment didn’t include group details.… Continue Reading

Some protesters tear down security fence as thousands march outside Democratic National Convention

CHICAGO (AP) — Dozens of protesters broke through a security fence near the site of the Democratic National Convention on its opening day as thousands took to the streets to voice their opposition to the war in Gaza. Families with babies in strollers, students, elected leaders and others holding signs and flags joined the march on Monday to the United Center, where the convention is being held, to call for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. As the larger group marched peacefully, a few dozen who broke away tore down pieces of the security fence. Several protesters who had managed to get through the fence were detained and handcuffed by officers.… Continue Reading

A woman accused of aiding an escaped prisoner appears in a North Carolina court

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. (AP) — The woman accused of helping an escaped prisoner in North Carolina evade police appeared in court for the first time since her arrest. Jacobia Crisp was charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive and harboring an escapee. Local outlets say she could face more than five years in prison if she is convicted of both charges. Law enforcement says Crisp helped 30-year-old Ramone Alston elude police for multiple days after he escaped from a transport van in Hillsborough. He was later captured in Kannapolis at a hotel on Friday.… Continue Reading

Biden gets a rousing ovation from Democrats as he gives Harris an enthusiastic endorsement

CHICAGO (AP) — President Joe Biden has delivered his valedictory address to the Democratic National Convention, saying, “I gave my best to you.” He basked in a long ovation that reflected the energy released by his decision to cede the stage to Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden received a hero’s welcome weeks after many in his party were pressuring him to drop his bid for reelection. The opening night of the convention in Chicago was designed as a handoff from the incumbent to his hand-picked successor — albeit four years before he intended for her to follow him. A visibly emotional Biden was greeted by a more than four-minute-long ovation and chants of “Thank you Joe.”… Continue Reading

Trump will campaign in NC this week as he struggles to adjust to Harris

YORK, Pa. (AP) — As Democrats kick off their convention in Chicago, Donald Trump is trying to regain his footing after weeks of struggling to adjust to Vice President Kamala Harris as his rival. The former president and GOP nominee on Monday delivered a speech at a factory in Pennsylvania as he attempts to undercut the Democratic celebration with a jam-packed schedule. He is holding daily events in battleground states tied to subjects where Republicans think they hold an advantage, including the economy, crime and safety, national security and the border.… Continue Reading

17,000 AT&T workers in Southeast strike over contract negotiations

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — More than 17,000 AT&T workers in nine states across the Southeast are on strike. The Communications Workers of America represents the striking employees and says workers walked off the job Friday in response to AT&T’s failure to bargain in good faith. The labor organization says AT&T did not send representatives to the bargaining table who had authority to make decisions. AT&T says the accusations are “not grounded in fact.” The strike involves AT&T technicians, customer service representatives, and others who install, maintain and support AT&T’s residential and business networks. It involves workers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.… Continue Reading

George Santos pleads guilty, acknowledging lies and blaming ambition for conning his way to Congress

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. George Santos has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in his federal fraud case. The New York Republican entered the plea Monday in a courtroom in Long Island. His trial had been set to start in early September. Santos was indicted on charges that he stole from political donors, used campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses, lied to Congress about his wealth and collected unemployment benefits while working. He was expelled from Congress after an ethics investigation found what it called “overwhelming evidence” that Santos had broken the law and exploited his public position for his own profit.… Continue Reading

Got cold symptoms? Here’s when kids should take a sick day from school

PHOENIX (AP) — School attendance tanked during the pandemic and has only started to recover. One reason? Parents are struggling to decide when it’s ok to send a child to school while sick. During the pandemic, schools had strict COVID-19 protocols. Many parents kept kids home for days after they had a cough or fever. Schools and health experts are now saying it is OK to send children to class with some symptoms of illness, including a runny nose or cough. If your child has a fever, keep them home from school until the fever is gone for 24 hours without medication.… Continue Reading
