Trump’s campaign called it an economic address. He made big promises but mostly veered off topic

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — For good or ill, Donald Trump failed to stay on message as he gave what his aides billed as a major economic address in North Carolina. The former president opened his speech Wednesday with off-script attacks on the media and aired his grievances over the Democrats swapping Vice President Kamala Harris for President Joe Biden atop their ticket. He went after his rival in deeply personal terms, questioning her intelligence and saying she has “the laugh of a crazy person.” Trump said that his aides wanted him to focus on economic concerns, but he was not sure the economy is the most important issue of the election.… Continue Reading

NASA still deciding whether to keep 2 astronauts at space station until next year

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA says it’s still deciding whether to keep two astronauts at the International Space Station until early next year and send their troubled Boeing capsule back empty. NASA officials said Wednesday they’re analyzing more data before making a decision by end of next week or beginning of the next. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were supposed to stay at the space station for a week when they rocketed away in June as Starliner’s first crew. But thruster failures and helium leaks marred the capsule’s trip there, raising doubts about its ability to return safely.… Continue Reading

Japanese are worried and confused after first-ever megaquake advisory. What does it mean?

TOKYO (AP) — Japan, one of the most earthquake-prone nations on earth, issued its first-ever “megaquake advisory” last week after a powerful quake struck off the southeastern coast of the southern main island of Kyushu. The magnitude 7.1 quake caused no deaths or severe damage but the advisory has led to widespread confusion and a…… Continue Reading

Stock market today: Wall Street holds firm after inflation data clears the path for cuts to rates

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is holding relatively steady after the latest update on inflation came in almost exactly as economists expected. The S&P 500 edged up by 0.3% in midday trading Wednesday, coming off one of its best days of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 184 points, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1%. Treasury yields were easing a bit after the U.S. government said consumers paid prices for food, gasoline and other things last month that were 2.9% higher than a year earlier. The data should keep the Federal Reserve on track to cut its main interest rate in September.… Continue Reading

Ernesto becomes a hurricane after pummeling northeast Caribbean and knocking out power in the regio

TOA BAJA, Puerto Rico (AP) — Ernesto has strengthened into a hurricane and is dropping torrential rain on Puerto Rico, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power in the U.S. territory. Ernesto threatens to strengthen into a major storm en route to Bermuda. It’s forecast to move through open waters for the rest of the week and make its closest approach to Bermuda on Saturday. The storm is forecast to become a major Category 3 hurricane in upcoming days. Ernesto was located about 225 miles (365 kilometers) northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico and was moving over open waters. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).… Continue Reading

Harris campaign’s new $90 million in battleground ads in August aims to sharpen contrast with Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is launching a $90 million advertising effort over the next three weeks to introduce the Democrat to voters and sharpen the contrast with Republican Donald Trump. The media buy marks her campaign’s largest-yet investment in messaging to voters with just 2 1/2 months until Election Day in November. Harris’ team says the ad campaign will focus on the vice president’s personal narrative and her career as a prosecutor in California and a contrast with what it termed Trump’s “dangerous, extreme agenda.” The ad buy will reach seven battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.… Continue Reading

Donald Trump Is Coming to North Carolina for an Economic Speech. Can He Stick to a Clear Message?

Donald Trump Is Coming to North Carolina for an Economic Speech. Can He Stick to a Clear Message?

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Donald Trump will have an opportunity to recalibrate his presidential comeback bid with a rally and speech in North Carolina that his campaign is billing as a significant economic address. The event on Wednesday afternoon in Asheville carries both national and local implications for the former president. Aides and allies say Trump must sharpen his arguments against Vice President Kamala Harris and draw a clear policy contrast, especially on the economy. He’s not done that in recent weeks, focusing instead on personal attacks and grievances. Trump also cannot afford to lose North Carolina. The state gave him his closest statewide margin of victory over Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.… Continue Reading

A strengthening Ernesto is poised to become a hurricane after brushing past Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Ernesto is poised to become a hurricane after brushing past Puerto Rico as officials closed schools, opened shelters and moved dozens of the U.S. territory’s endangered parrots into hurricane-proof rooms. Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane overnight as the center of the storm moves just northeast of Puerto Rico on a path toward Bermuda. Forecasters issued a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands as well as the tiny Puerto Rican islands of Vieques and Culebra, which are popular with tourists. The storm moved over the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday night.… Continue Reading

Older Americans prepare themselves for a world altered by artificial intelligence

Older Americans prepare themselves for a world altered by artificial intelligence

NORTHFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Older adults are grappling with how artificial intelligence is changing the world. The technology offers them significant benefits, from the ability to curb loneliness to making it easier to get to medical appointments. But it also has drawbacks that could be particularly dangerous for older people. A series of studies have found that senior citizens are more susceptible to both scams perpetrated using artificial intelligence and believing the types of misinformation that are being supercharged by the technology. To learn more about how AI works, seniors are taking classes to figure out how AI is transforming their world — and the threat it poses.… Continue Reading

Harris cautiously rolls out policy, aiming to outmaneuver Trump and address 2020 liabilities

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris is trying to outmaneuver former President Donald Trump and address old vulnerabilities on her policy positions as she starts to fill in how she would govern if elected in November. After four years of following President Joe Biden’s lead, Harris is taking a cautious approach to unveiling a policy vision in her own right. Asked by reporters on Saturday when she would unveil her policy platform, Harris promised more details this week and added, “It’ll be focused on the economy and what we need to do to bring down costs and also strengthen the economy overall.”… Continue Reading
