A year later, sprawling Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump has stalled

A year later, sprawling Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump has stalled

ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia grand jury in August 2023 accused Donald Trump and others of illegally trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state. A year later, the case is largely stalled with no chance of going to trial before the end of this year. When Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis secured the indictment a year ago Thursday, it was the fourth and most sprawling of the criminal cases against the former president. Willis’ team notched some early victories in the case, but explosive allegations raised by one of Trump’s co-defendants early this year have caused a delay and could even derail the prosecution.… Continue Reading

Plan approved by North Carolina panel to meet prisoner reentry goals

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A panel has laid out specifics designed to bring numerous North Carolina state government agencies together to improve outcomes for prisoners when they are released, leading to reduced recidivism. The Joint Reentry Council created by Gov. Roy Cooper’s executive order in January last week approved a plan to meet more than two dozen objectives by using over 130 different strategies. Cooper’s order also aligned with the goals of a national effort being developed by the Council of State Governments and other groups to promote successful offender integration. More than 18,000 people are released annually from dozens of North Carolina adult correctional facilities.… Continue Reading

Biden announces $150 million in research grants as part of his ‘moonshot’ push to fight cancer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — President Joe Biden visited New Orleans on Tuesday to promote his administration’s “moonshot” initiative aiming to dramatically reduce cancer deaths. The president and first lady Jill Biden toured medical facilities that receive federal funding to investigate cancer treatments at Tulane University. Researchers used a piece of raw meat to demonstrate how they are working to improve scanning technology to quickly distinguish between healthy and cancerous cells during surgeries. The Bidens championed the announcement of $150 million in awards from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health. Those will support eight teams of researchers around the country working on ways to help surgeons remove tumors from people with cancer.… Continue Reading

Trump and Musk talk about assassination attempt and deportations during glitchy chat on X

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump recounted his assassination attempt in vivid detail and promised the largest deportation in U.S. history during a high-profile return to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The conversation with X’s owner Elon Musk was plagued by technical glitches Monday night. The rare public conversation, which was overwhelmingly friendly, revealed little new about Trump’s plans for a second term. Musk, a former Trump critic, said the Republican nominee’s toughness, as demonstrated by his reaction to last month’s shooting, was critical for national security. Trump said, “I need an Elon Musk — I need somebody that has a lot of strength and courage and smarts.”… Continue Reading

All qualifying North Carolina hospitals are joining debt-reduction effort, governor says

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper says nearly 100 hospitals have agreed to participate in a first-of-its-kind initiative that could help low- and middle-income patients get rid of billions of dollars in debt. Cooper said Monday that all qualifying hospitals have committed to the voluntary debt-elimination effort. Those include the largest hospital systems. These hospitals will get even higher Medicaid payments if medical debt on their books get cleared and they carry out ways for future patients to avoid liabilities. Cooper and state Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley unveiled the plan six weeks ago. Federal Medicaid regulators also have signed off on the idea.… Continue Reading

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. can remain on the North Carolina presidential ballot, judge says

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A judge has ruled that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. can remain on North Carolina’s presidential ballots. Superior Court Judge Keith Gregory rejected the preliminary injunction request by the North Carolina Democratic Party. The request denied on Monday had challenged the State Board of Elections’ recent decision to certify “We the People” as an official party. We the People has been used by Kennedy supporters to get him on the ballot in a handful of states. Lawyers for the Democrats say it was wrong for Kennedy to use the political party route to collect signatures. They say he should have to collect six times as many signatures as an independent candidate.… Continue Reading

The Democratic National Committee is launching its first round of paid advertising in seven battleground states for the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign. The advertising push spans Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Democrats say more than 70 billboards will be set up along major interstates and highways in the states’ urban areas. Monday’s ad buys come after the pair stumped across many of the battleground states last week as Republican Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance mirrored their appearances across the country.… Continue Reading
