MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Imelda has formed near the Bahamas and is forecast to become a hurricane curving away from the southeast U.S. seacoast early this week. Imelda was churning up rough seas, wind and rain on Sunday around the Bahamas and nearby islands, just over 350 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto remains a dangerous Category 4 storm farther out in the Atlantic on a forecast track that could threaten Bermuda. In the Southeast U.S., South Carolina’s governor urged residents Sunday to remain alert, while North Carolina declared a state of emergency for any impacts from Imelda even though forecasters say the storm should spin away from the East Coast in coming days.… Read More

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Chase Elliott has pulled off an unexpected win at Kansas Speedway. He drove from eighth to first in a two-lap overtime sprint, securing a spot in the third round of NASCAR’s playoffs. Denny Hamlin dominated most of the race, leading 159 laps, but late issues cost him the victory. Bubba Wallace was in position to win after a red-flag stoppage, battling Christopher Bell. Hamlin caught up, but Elliott smashed past him for his second win of the season. Elliott joins Ryan Blaney in the next playoff round. The field will be cut to eight drivers after next week’s race in Concord, North Carolina.… Read More

Europe retains the Ryder Cup and reasserts dominance over Americans

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 28, 2025, 7:39 pm

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Europe is keeping the Ryder Cup, just like everyone expected. It didn’t happen without a few nervous moments. The Americans rallied from a seven-point deficit to have a flicker of hope. Europe needed only two points to retain the cup. Ludvig Aberg in the fifth match got the first one. Matt Fitzpatrick earned a halve that felt like a consolation because he had Bryson DeChambeau down by 5 holes at one point. And then Shane Lowry delivered the magic and added his name to Irish lore. His birdied on the 18th hole gave Europe a half to reach 14 points.… Read More

Authorities say the shooting happened Saturday night near a popular area in Southport. The alleged assailant, identified as Nigel Edge, reportedly piloted a small boat close to shore, fired into the crowd, and sped away. Edge is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and other charges. congressional leaders at the White House on Monday, one day before the deadline to fund the federal government or face a shutdown. The meeting involving House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune as well as House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was confirmed Saturday by a White House official and two other people familiar with the planning. The parties have been in a standoff for days as Democrats, namely in the Senate, have refused to offer the necessary votes to pass a funding measure that would keep the government open beyond Tuesday.… Read More

Europe takes a record lead into Ryder Cup’s Sunday singles

Europe takes a record lead into Ryder Cup’s Sunday singles

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 27, 2025, 9:31 pm

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York fans gave Europe a stronger challenge than the American players. Team Europe handled both beautifully and are on the verge of winning the Ryder Cup again. Europe won six of the eight matches Saturday and set a Ryder Cup record with an 11 1/2-4 1/2 lead going into the Sunday singles. Rory McIlroy caught the brunt of the verbal abuse. He answered with an expletive and great golf. McIlroy has won all four of his matches. Scottie Scheffler made the wrong kind of history by becoming the first player to go 0-4 in the team matches.… Read More

Trump snubs Biden with autopen photo on new Presidential Walk of Fame

Trump snubs Biden with autopen photo on new Presidential Walk of Fame

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 26, 2025, 1:59 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has added a Presidential Walk of Fame to the White House, featuring portraits of previous commanders-in-chief — except for one. Instead of Joe Biden’s portrait, Trump hung a photo of an autopen signing the Democrat president’s name. This move reflects Trump’s ongoing attempts to delegitimize Biden, whom he has frequently criticized. Trump has never acknowledged his defeat to Biden in the 2020 election, falsely attributing it to voter fraud. The Walk of Fame is part of several design changes Trump has made since resuming office, including adding gold flourishes and new flagpoles.… Read More

Bryson DeChambeau put a charge into the Ryder Cup crowd. Europe has snuffed it out

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 26, 2025, 1:44 pm

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau delivered a rousing start to the Ryder Cup. Turns out that’s all it was during an opening session bathed in European blue. Jon Rahm won his fifth straight foursomes match and Europe had a 3-1 lead after the opening session. The notorious Bethpage Black crowd has been mostly silent because the scoreboard has been filled with European blue points. The Europeans won the first three matches with ease. None reached the 16th hole. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele saved the Americans from another opening session shutout when they won the anchor match just as President Donald Trump was arriving.… Read More

Hurricane Helene hit the reset button on one town’s goal of becoming an outdoor tourism mecca

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 26, 2025, 11:14 am

OLD FORT, N.C. (AP) — The mountain “gateway” town of Old Fort, North Carolina, was well on its way to achieving a major goal: to become a hot spot for mountain biking and all things outdoors. Then nature, as one business owner put it, hit “the reset button.” A year ago, floodwaters from the remnants of Hurricane Helene inundated the town, washing out miles of multi-purpose trails and closing long stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a tourist lifeline. Chad Schoenauer has reopened his Old Fort Bike Shop, but he’s doing more repairs than sales these days. Tourism spending last year was way off in the mountains, but many are hoping for a successful fall foliage season to hit the reset button again.… Read More
