Trump says he will order federal intervention in Chicago and Baltimore despite local opposition

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 2, 2025, 11:19 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he will direct federal law enforcement intervention to combat crime in Chicago and Baltimore, despite staunch opposition from state and local officials in both cities. Asked Tuesday by reporters in the Oval Office about sending National Guard troops to Chicago, Trump said, “We’re going in,” but added, “I didn’t say when.” He added: “I have an obligation. This isn’t a political thing.” Trump has already sent National Guard troops into Washington and federalized the police force in the nation’s capital. More recently, he has said he plans similar moves in other cities, particularly those run by Democratic officials.… Read More

Rescuers race to find Afghan quake survivors as death toll passes 1,400

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 2, 2025, 11:16 pm

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban say a major earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed over 1,400 people and injured more than 3,000. The United Nations warns of a potential rise in casualties. The earthquake struck Sunday night, flattening villages and trapping people under rubble. Rough terrain is hampering rescue efforts, with commandos air-dropped to evacuate the injured. The Taliban have appealed for international assistance, but aid is limited due to global crises and reduced budgets. Many health facilities have closed due to funding cuts, overwhelming the remaining ones. Authorities have set up camps and centers to coordinate aid and rescue efforts.… Read More

Michael Jordan’s NASCAR team fights for charter status amid explosive lawsuit

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 2, 2025, 4:53 pm

Summary
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Two NASCAR teams, including one owned by Michael Jordan, have argued in federal court for a preliminary injunction to be recognized as chartered organizations. This comes amid their antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR. The teams have responded to NASCAR’s decision not to redistribute charters while the case proceeds. The teams, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, claim the charter system is unfair. They initially won charter status for this season, but it was overturned. NASCAR wants the money back from when they were chartered. A ruling on the injunction is expected soon, as tensions rise among other teams.… Read More

US stocks sink under the weight of rising pressure from the bond market

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 2, 2025, 4:36 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street fell under the weight of pressure from the bond market. The S&P 500 slipped 0.7% Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.5%, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 0.8%. Big Tech stocks that have received criticism after their prices shot higher in recent years were the heaviest weights on the market. Rising yields in the bond market cranked up the pressure for all kinds of stocks. Worries about mounting debt loads for governments worldwide, plus President Donald Trump’s attacks on the Federal Reserve, have pushed yields higher. When bonds pay more interest, investors are less willing to pay high prices for stocks.… Read More

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is on his way to Beijing by train to attend a military parade with his Chinese and Russian counterparts, an event that could demonstrate their potential three-way unity against the United States. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency reported early Tuesday that Kim left Pyongyang for Beijing by his special train on Monday to participate in celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the end of the World War II. Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin are among the 26 world leaders who’ll join Chinese President Xi Jinping to watch Wednesday’s massive military parade in Beijing.… Read More

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Bud Clark had a first-half pick-six and Kevorian Barnes had a 75-yard touchdown run on the first second-half snap to help TCU spoil Bill Belichick’s college coaching debut by rolling past North Carolina 48-14 on Monday night. The 73-year-old Belichick had won six Super Bowl titles in a 24-year run as head coach of the NFL’s New England Patriots. His Tar Heels scored on the first possession but TCU took over with 41 unanswered points. That included Devean Deal joining Clark with a defensive touchdown on a fumble return in a third quarter that turned the game into a romp.… Read More

Trump plans a hefty tax on imported drugs, risking higher prices and shortages

Trump plans a hefty tax on imported drugs, risking higher prices and shortages

Author: The Associated Press | Date: September 2, 2025, 12:05 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has plastered taxes on products from almost every country on earth. He’s targeted specific imports, too. But he isn’t done yet. Trump has promised another round of hefty import taxes on a category of products he’s so far spared in his trade war with the world: pharmaceuticals. For decades, in fact, imported medicine has mostly been allowed to enter the United States duty free. Now the president is threatening duties of 200% or more on foreign drugs. That could disrupt complex and fragile supply chains, drive cheap foreign-made generic drugs out of the U.S., create drug shortages and raise American drug prices.… Read More

Bill Belichick won big in the NFL. Can he do it as a rookie college coach at North Carolina?

Author: The Associated Press | Date: August 31, 2025, 11:39 pm

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina is set for its football debut under Bill Belichick. The Tar Heels open the season Monday against TCU. That will mark the first game at the college level for Belichick after spending his entire coaching career in the NFL. Belichick led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles during a 24-year run there. Now he’s recruiting high school players and meeting with school donors. It’s all part of a bet by UNC that the 73-year-old college rookie can elevate its football program. That includes paying Belichick $10 million guaranteed for each of the next three years.… Read More

Trump is cutting 500-plus jobs at Voice of America and its parent agency despite legal challenges

Author: The Associated Press | Date: August 31, 2025, 10:10 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The agency that oversees Voice of America and other government-funded international broadcasters says it’s eliminating jobs for more than 500 employees. That word came late Friday and could ratchet up a monthslong legal challenge over the news outlets’ fate. A federal judge on Thursday had blocked the administration from removing Michael Abramowitz as VOA director. And the same judge earlier in the week had ruled that the Trump administration had failed to show how it was complying with his orders to restore VOA operations.… Read More

Trump ends ex-Vice President Harris’ Secret Service protection early after Biden had extended it

Author: The Associated Press | Date: August 29, 2025, 11:14 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection that otherwise would’ve ended next summer. That’s according to senior Trump administration officials. Former vice presidents typically get federal government protection for six months after leaving office, while ex-presidents do so for life. But another person familiar with the matter says then-President Joe Biden quietly signed a directive, at Harris’ request, that had extended protection for her. The people insisted on anonymity Friday to discuss a matter not made public. Trump is a Republican. Biden and Harris are Democrats. Trump defeated Harris in the presidential election last year after Biden dropped out of the contest and Harris replaced him.… Read More
