RALEIGH, N.C. (WPTF) – Raleigh police are issuing guidance after a rabid raccoon was found in the city on Sunday (Sept. 6)
Animal Control officers responded to reports that a raccoon that was observed staggering and walking in circles in the 400 block of Chadwick Dr.
Animal Control safely removed the raccoon, and submitted it for rabies testing. On Tuesday, (Sept. 8), test results confirmed that the raccoon was positive for the rabies virus.
The raccoon came into contact with a citizen’s dog. The dog’s owner has been notified, and the dog will be placed under a 45-day quarantine monitored by the Raleigh Police Department’s Animal Control Unit.
This is the second raccoon to test positive for rabies in the City of Raleigh this year and the fourth confirmed rabies case in the city in 2026.

Wake County health officials provide the following general tips to help minimize rabies risks:
• Residents should not approach animals that they do not know.
• Residents should ensure their pets have a current rabies vaccination. If a pet is allowed outside, a booster vaccine is recommended. Outdoor pets should be kept inside until they receive booster vaccines.
• Do not feed stray or unknown animals, including cats and dogs.
• Do not leave trash or food outside unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.
• If a pet is fed outside, do not leave food out overnight.
• If a pet comes in contact with an animal that might be rabid, contact a veterinarian immediately.
