Ingredients
Dough
- 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Filling
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup pepperoni slices or cooked Italian sausage
- 1/4 cup sautéed peppers, onions, or mushrooms (optional)
For Finishing
- 1 egg, beaten
- Extra parmesan and Italian seasoning for topping
- Marinara sauce for dipping
Instructions
1. Prep the Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F. Line a baking sheet or pizza stone with parchment paper.
2. Make the Filling
In a bowl, mix together the ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir in the pepperoni or sausage and any vegetables you’d like to add.
3. Shape the Dough
Divide the pizza dough into 2 or 4 portions depending on the size you want. Roll each piece into a circle about 1/4-inch thick.
4. Fill and Fold
Spoon filling onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a border around the edge. Fold the other half over the filling and press the edges together. Crimp with a fork to seal.
5. Add the Finishing Touches
Transfer the calzones to the baking sheet. Cut a few small slits on top for steam to escape. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with parmesan and Italian seasoning.
6. Bake
Bake for 12–16 minutes or until deeply golden brown and crisp.
7. Serve
Let the calzones cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm with marinara sauce on the side.
