Israel widens evacuation orders in southern Gaza. Hamas wants plans for a deal instead of more talks

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Israeli military ordered more evacuations in southern Gaza early Sunday, a day after a deadly airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in the north killed at least 80 Palestinians, according to local health authorities. The airstrike was one of the deadliest attacks in the 10-month war. Hamas appeared to push back against resuming…… Continue Reading

Vance hails Trump’s Fed idea and pushes back against criticism over past words on American families

ATLANTA (AP) — Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance used a round of news show appearances to disparage the Democratic ticket and promote Donald Trump’s record and second-term plans. The Ohio senator also defended himself from criticism over past remarks that have become a campaign issue. In a series of taped interviews that aired Sunday, Vance said there was merit to Trump’s suggestion that presidents have more control of U.S. monetary policy. Vance also kept up the GOP line that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democrats’ vice presidential candidate, had exaggerated his military record. Vance also tried to clarify Trump’s position on abortion.… Continue Reading

Lee Roberts named permanent UNC chancellor after serving as interim leader

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has voted to approve the nomination of Lee Roberts as the next chancellor of UNC at Chapel Hill. Roberts has served as the interim chancellor at UNC since the start of the year when former Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz left to become president of Michigan State University. Roberts was also previously a UNC Board of Governors member and the state budget director for former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory. His approval Friday means the university system has filled its fifth chancellor vacancy in the last year.… Continue Reading

US colleges are cutting majors and slashing programs after years of putting it off

US colleges are cutting majors and slashing programs after years of putting it off

St. Cloud, MINN (AP) – Colleges large and small in the U.S. are cutting programs and eliminating majors to make ends meet. Among their budget challenges: Federal COVID relief money is expiring, operational costs are rising and fewer high school graduates are going straight to college. At St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, officials announced a plan to cut 42 degree programs and 50 minors, music among them. The move has created turmoil for students who chose the campus to study music. Humanities and the arts often top the list of cuts across the country. Some colleges are phasing out the programs. In others, students are abruptly forced to find a new school or change directions.… Continue Reading

Pentagon chief orders submarine to the Middle East, tells aircraft carrier to hasten its transit

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a guided missile submarine to the Middle East and is telling the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to sail more quickly to the area. The moves come as the U.S. and other allies push for Israel and Hamas to achieve a cease-fire agreement that could help calm soaring tensions in the region following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut.… Continue Reading

Debby’s aftermath leaves thousands in the dark; threatens more flooding in the Carolinas

Debby’s aftermath leaves thousands in the dark; threatens more flooding in the Carolinas

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The weather system dubbed Debby isn’t quite done affecting parts of the U.S. After arriving in Florida as a hurricane Aug. 5, the storm spent nearly a week unleashing tornadoes and flooding, damaging homes and taking lives along the East Coast before moving into Canada on Saturday. While many rivers had receded by Sunday, flood warnings remained in effect in several areas across central and eastern North Carolina, where more thunderstorms were possible over the next few days. The National Weather Service says localized downpours could result in additional flash flooding throughout the coastal Carolinas. More than 48,000 homes and businesses in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont still had no electricity Sunday.… Continue Reading

Maduro goes after X and WhatsApp as pressure mounts to back up his claim to victory in Venezuela

Maduro goes after X and WhatsApp as pressure mounts to back up his claim to victory in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro is trying to accomplish something that seems impossible in the South American country: steer people away from WhatsApp and X. Maduro’s announcement this week that he has ordered a 10-day block on access to X in Venezuela is the latest in a series of efforts by his government to try to suppress information sharing among the population voicing doubts about his claim to victory in the July 28 presidential election. It also reveals how every aspect of Venezuela’s government is subject to Maduro’s wants and needs, as he went from demanding retweets from his Cabinet in May to ordering the nation’s telecommunications agency on Thursday to block access to X.… Continue Reading

Dead woman found entangled in O’Hare baggage machinery was from North Carolina, authorities say

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities have identified the dead woman who was found entangled in a baggage conveyor belt at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman Friday as 57-year-old Virginia Christine Vinton, of Waxhaw, North Carolina. Firefighters responding to a 911 call found Vinton’s body entangled in the belt around 7:45 a.m. Thursday in a baggage room near a terminal that serves international flights. According to police, surveillance footage shows Vinton enter the area around 2:27 a.m. Thursday, but it doesn’t show what happened to her. Authorities say the room where Vinton’s body was found is off limits to the public, and it’s unclear why she was in it.… Continue Reading

Body camera footage shows local police anger at Secret Service after Trump assassination attempt

WASHINGTON (AP) — A local police officer told a fellow officer after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump that he warned the Secret Service days earlier that the building where the 20-year-old gunman opened fire needed to be secured. Videos show frustration among local law enforcement at how Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to slip away from their view, scale a roof and open fire with AR-style rifle shortly after Trump starting speaking. Trump was struck in the ear but avoided serious injury. One spectator was killed and two others were injured.… Continue Reading

Wall Street is waffling at the close of its wild, whipsaw week

Wall Street is waffling at the close of its wild, whipsaw week

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are holding relatively steady at the tail end of a wild, whipsaw week for Wall Street. The S&P 500 was basically flat Friday, coming off its best day since 2022. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 41 points, and the Nasdaq composite was virtually unchanged. After yo-yoing through several sharp swings, the S&P 500 is on track to close a fourth straight losing week. That would be its longest such streak in almost a year. Friday’s mixed trading came after more big companies reported better profit for the spring than expected. Expedia Group jumped following its report, though it noted softening demand recently.… Continue Reading
